couple of months ago, Germany had a nazi SS veteran deported form us to germany to be tried for the deaths of 20,000-30,000 people at a death camp in poland. whats happened to him so far?
last i know is from cnn, that on May 11th he was transported back to germany Demjanjuk deported to Germany - CNN.com http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/may/12/john-demnanjuk-extradited-germany ^ article about the case in general, but i dont see a trial date set
Demjanjuk was cleared of the "Ivan the Terrible" charge, he was released from Israeli custody after being originally found guilty of the charge. When it became apparent that the Soviet files used to convict him were falsified, the charges were recinded and he was returned to the US. The Israeli court couldn't retry him because the extradition work had been based on that single charge alone. Since arriving in Germany he has been examined by physicians and found healthy enough to stand trial, it will be limited to 90 minute sessions, twice a day so his health is not taxed to much. I believe the last I read was that the trial was supposed to begin sometime in October, but no concrete time-frame has been set. This is the last article I have read on the situation: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090719/wl_afp/germanytrialhistoryholocaust_20090719140633 I was amused when Demjanjuk was released from Israeli custody, one reporter said something to the effect that; "while it is obvious Demjanjuk isn't the guard "Ivan the Terrible", he may well be an "Ivan the not so nice".
This is from 6 days ago. Evidently, his trial is set to begin in October. Accused Nazi Demjanjuk's Trial to Start in October - ABC News
Demjanjuk lawyer calls for case to be closed - Yahoo! News Demjanjuk's attorney Ulrich Busch filed a motion arguing that the German charges should be dropped, citing a 1993 ruling by the Israeli Supreme Court overturning a 1988 conviction and death sentence in Israel for being a Nazi guard known as Ivan the Terrible who operated the gas chamber at the Treblinka death camp. Munich prosecutors said in their indictment that the Israeli case did not focus on Demjanjuk's alleged activities at Sobibor. They could not immediately be reached for comment on Busch's motion.
