Great analysis of John Wayne and his potential wartime service, at least he still got to invade Japan in his own little way. :D (For those who don't get it, Wayne is "Big in Japan", seriously)

Hi Meher, your right Duke is very big in Japan-let alone so many other places.

As for gary wills, he's a lying assphole. The correct and true info about Duke not serving has the photographic proof which was posted over @ JWMB. Also, i've pointed the truth out here several times as why Duke was not allowed to serve.

    1) The military found that Duke could do more good for the war effort by keeping up the publics morale by making more movies as well as his visits to frontline soldiers and such.

    2) Duke was over-age for the draft and volunteered to serve but was turned down not only because he already had at least 3 children who depended on his making money for the household but Duke was also classified as medically unfit to serve due to bad ear drums.

Photos of his actual documents proving that he tried to enlist-are available and can be seen over at Duke Wayne as well as on the John Wayne . com site ;-)) I have seen these documents-which were posted by a man who was friend swith Duke for many years starting back when he acted in several of Dukes Westerns including: Rio Grande and She Wore A Yellow Ribbon. This man was also one of Dukes personal pilots and also helped him out a the 26 Bar Ranch in Arizona-which was partially owned by Duke. The man I speak about was also a Fighter Pilot during the Korean War, and also had his own TV show. His name is William T. Brooks.

Now, if you want to hear the juicy stuff? they need to interview Pat Stacy-the lady who spent much time with Duke and wrote her own book(s) about her time with Duke. Duke liked her and trusted her and was one of the reasons why he let her biograph his life experiances ;-))

Surprisingly I didn't know much about John Wayne's wartime service other than the movies and USO stuff he did. I was to a certain extent aware of Vietnam and the general controvesy surronding his work their.

Thanks for the other references Carl, great sites!
