American Neil Armstrong has become the first man to walk on the Moon. The astronaut stepped onto the Moon's surface, in the Sea of Tranquility, at 0256 GMT, nearly 20 minutes after first opening the hatch on the Eagle landing craft. BBC ON THIS DAY | 21 | 1969: Man takes first steps on the Moon
What a hero, not to mention that he is a God at Trompet playing and won the Tour de France seven times
WHAT???? Oh I get it, never mind. I've got a few 8x10 glossy's from the Apollo program tucked away and a scrapbook I started back in 1969. Matter of fact, just picked up a copy of a July 22, 1969 newspaper at a estate sale to go along with the scrapbook.
I believe the BBC got this wrong by a day, it seems to me it was the 20 they landed, and Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin blasted off from the moon aboard the ascent stage of the lunar module for docking with the command module on this date, 21st. See: NASA Apollo 11 30th Anniversary
Naw I thought so too but it's because of England being near the Date Line. By Greenwich Mean Time it was already the next day or we were a day behind? Might as well add that Buzz was one heck of an astronaut but not so much as a dancer.
I don't think so Biak, there is a four or five hour time difference between US Eastern Time and GMT in Britain. So that would only be a little after 8 or 9 in the evening of the 20th in Britain. The International Date Line is on the opposite side of the globe BTW.
not wrong clint, it's the time zone.. at 0256 GMT 21st july, and you'd be correct in the 20th too..ray..
Armstrong set foot on the surface at 10:56PM EDT (GMT -4 hours) July 20 which is 2:56AM GMT July 21. He reboarded the lunar module at 1:11 AM EDT July 21.
Well, to bring this thread full circle, it was today, the 24th of July that the astronauts splashed down in the Pacific.
