Just returned from trip to Philadelphia. Besides my wifes shopping I was able to see so much history. Made my first ever trip to valley forge(we were lucky, our hotel was only about 3 miles from site). Of course all the famous places in downtown Philly also. I must brag, I ran the rocky steps.(okay only 6 or 7 then walked the rest, same as stallone actually.) On way home I was able to visit gettysburg for first time in 48 years. Really something too see and gives you a greater appreciation of the battle when actually there. Same goes for Valley Forge. Amazing what the troops there had to go through. One wonders if in today's society young men could find the way to survive a valley forge or face death at a place like gettysburg with the tactics of 150 years ago. Both places are a awe inspiring visit. I realize many if not most here have probably been too Gettysburg but it is worth a second trip if you have the chance. Valley Forge is a absolute must. Oh by the way one interesting fact(at least I hope it is) is that in one trip I was able to visit 3 different cities that were at one time the nations capital. Besides Philly, I also visited Lancaster and York Pa. If going through Lancaster you have to take a buggy ride. On way home we stayed at chambersburg and too late I realized antietam was so close. Oh well maybe next time. Now maybe I can concentrate on a couple of the ww2 books I need to read yet. david
Sounds like a great trip. Valley Forge is a beautiful place and inspired some of the same questions, you had. The feeling of history there is overpowering. It must have been terribly miserable for the Continental Army, especially with their supplies so low and pay and supply deliveries erratic.
