    San Diego —
Lent E. Matthews Jr. was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Ardmore to Lent E. Matthews Sr. and Stella B. (Crosthwaite) Matthews. He died Aug. 4, 2009. His final resting place is in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego.

Lent was in World War II in the 1st Calvary U.S. Army like his father before him. When he came home from the war, my aunt said to my sissy, “Who is that man?” and I said, “That ain’t no man, that’s my daddy,” and he always will be.

He belonged to the Odd Fellows in Hawthorne, Calif. He learned the shoe repair business from his father and grandfather in Ardmore on Caddo Street. He worked in the air craft factory as a machinist. He repaired clocks and watches. His last job was with the sheriff’s department in Palmdale, Calif.

He belonged to the Fin & Feather Club for over 40 years. He first joined to fish but then went on to the real love of his life, trap shooting. He won many events including High Vet’s. He was on the state team at Kingsburg many times and shot over 250,000 rounds and holds that award and won many belt buckles. He loved to shoot up until March of 2007 when he had a car accident and much to his dismay, I moved him to San Diego. He had to give up shooting and so he began his new job of a “ladies” man at his assisted living place. Up until the very end, he loved the “ladies”.

He became confused at the end of his life but would always enjoy his lady friends. It seems the ugly word Cancer was in his brain. In the end we put Lent in God’s and hospice hands to take him home. Donations can be made to Elizabeth Hospice at The Elizabeth Hospice. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie O'Dell Matthews, in 1994.

Survivors include his son, Kermit Matthews and wife Ruth of Danville, Calif.; daughter, Yvonne Bellinger of Solana Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
