Hi, I have a cousin interred in Long Island Cemetery, Farmingdale. I know nothing of this persons involvement in WW2 so I am wondering would the cemetery have any information on him if I contacted them? And would they give me that information if any? Thanks
It's unlikely the cemetery will have anything regarding his military records. If we had more information, we might be able to help you. If you have their full name, home town, date of birth, that would give us a place to start.
Thanks for your reply. His name is Charles J Dunn and he was born 23 Sep 1915 and died 25 June 1967. I have previously sent off a form SF-180 for more informaton on him but I did not get a reply. I should probably send it again and make sure to follow it up. I didnt have his dae of death when I sent it before. I found your relative's grave listing here. I tried to request a photo of the marker, but there was already a request submitted. Sometimes the markers will reference the unit in which the veteran served. I would check that link occasionally to see if a photo of the marked had been posted. I also noticed that you started this search about two years ago on our sister forum, WW2Talk. As far as I can tell, they did a pretty good job of finding what they can from online sources. Have you tried requesting his records since 2011? If not, you should try again and provide them with all the info you have regarding his enlistment info and his being a Lieutenant. I would also give them the option of sending you an email response. If you still have trouble getting any response, you may have to resort to hiring a researcher. This can be expensive, but it will also cost a bit to get copies of his service record if it still exists. Also, you are likely to get faster service with a private researcher.
I'm surprised that you haven't got a response to your SF-180. I would call the Records office in St. Louis. It may take a while for you to get a real person, but it's worth a try. In addition, I would re-file the form. You seem to have all the necessary information.
Hi Thank you for your replies and sorry for the late response. Perhaps the reason I never got a reply re. the form is that I live outside the USA? I will send it off again and follow it up this time.
You may also try asking for digital copies of the records. That would avoid the cost and hassle of international shipping which may have been why they didn't respond.
