    Does anybody out there have any personal history on a Winchester M1 number 1232972? I'm really interested in knowing where my rifle has been and who's carried it around, maybe into battle (if applicable). I've looked up the manufacture date and it says ~August 1941. Thanks for any help and have a good one.:)

    Do you have a picture to post? And where did you get it, when?

    I got it in high school about 6-7 years ago. It was given to me by my mom's friend because I was in JROTC Drill Team. I can take pictures of it, but I just got this Mac and it might take a while to upload a pic.

    I jotted down your serial number, I have a buddy at work that likes this sort of puzzle. I'll pass it along to him and maybe he'll get lucky.

    Alright, these are the photos. The first one's pretty obvious. The next two are pictures of the inspection stamps. The one on the left of the butt says SA with an F under it. The stamp on the inside of the grip is a P. The last picture is the overall condition of the rifle. The whole rifle is in that condition, just minor little dings in the wood. Thanks so much for the help.:D

    Very nice rifle. A good Winchester is something that about any garand collector wants. You take it to the range often?

    Thanks a lot. I haven't taken it to the range too often. There's a bit of pitting under the grip on top of the barrel, so I take it easy. I'm probably going to put a few rounds through it after pay day. There's a guy I work with who's wanting to give her a try. Thanks again!

    sax003,
    If you're still checking in, write Winchester and ask for info. They'll give you the manufacture date and first buyer. Hopefully that will get you started. Okay I know it's been a year but wanted to at least try.
    Back to add I found this site ::: http://www.fulton-armory.com/tea/m1serial.htm :::: that show it being made February 1943.

    Sax;
    If you are taking your rifle to the range be aware that it is recommended to use only .30-06 ammo loaded to M1 or (more commonly) M2 spec. in a Garand to avoid damaging the op-rod.
    Nice rifle by the way.

    Thanks for the help. I looked up the serial number on a website a number of years back and I got the same info and manufacture date. I really do appreciate the info and I'll give Winchester a shot. Thanks again!

    what is the date on the barrel? look under the front handguard. From the pictures it looks like the stock is mismatched and the "SA" stamp is the Springfield Armory cartouche.

    Does the rear sight "click" when you adjust it?

    Are there any stamps or emblems on the metal anywhere? A lot of M1 Carbines were exported for use in foreign armies, and found their way back to the states as surplus buys by gun dealers.

    Yes sir it does. The windage has a really dull thud and the elevation has sharp small clicks.
