I'm doing some research on Normandy and was wondering if anyone knows of a website which would show a map or drawing of the Allied front lines in Normandy at the beginning of Operation Cobra-July 25th 1944--or any date close to that? Thanks for any help. Dave
Dave, try this site. I think it is what you want. http://ww2db.com/photo.php?source=all&color=all&list=search&map=Y&foreigntype=B&foreigntype_id=112 You might also try here http://www.onwar.com/maps/wwii/normandy/
Just as a back-up site D-Day Maps - Perry-CastaƱeda Map Collection - Historical - UT Library Online one example (edit: didn't see the date you were looking for before posting - oops. http://www.westpoint.edu/history/SiteAssets/SitePages/World War II Europe/WWIIEurope62.gif - This interactive map is kinda' cool; http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwtwo/launch_ani_overlord_campaign.shtml )
Google is your friend, plenty of Cobra maps to be found. Also, don't forget about ibiblio.org's hyperwar website where this gem can be found: HyperWar: US Army in WWII: Breakout and Pursuit The maps you want are the ones listed by Roman numerals I through XV, and are listed down around the bottom quarter of the webpage.
Ah! I was going to throw down Hyperwar but Takao beat me to it. However, all of the suggestions seem to have at least one map on or around the date and operation in question. Good job, guys. Dave, be sure to let us know which, if any, work for you.
Hyperwar, is the first place I go, but if you want to see what Bradley was looking at try here: (Click on map, with a high speed connection, the viewer is pretty good, otherwise use second link, viewer clunky) [July 23, 1944], HQ Twelfth Army Group situation map. World War II Military Situation Maps - Browse by (American Memory from the Library of Congress) One must assume Bradley knew the German "divisions" less than full strength.
