Max Eugene Julian, Sr., 83 of Angola died May 28, 2010 at his home. In 1944, the Steuben County Basketball Champions was Pleasant Lake High School and Mr. Julian was on the team. He enlisted in the US Army Air Force upon graduation that same year. He proudly served his country during World War II and was a part of the 508th Maintenance and Supply group that supported the Enola Gay Bomber plane during training missions on Kwajalein Island in the Marshall Islands. Mr. Julian began his working career helping his Dad, Paul Julian, hauling gravel in one of his father's Model A or T dump trucks. In 1953, Max worked with earthmoving equipment on a 4-mile stretch of the Ohio Turnpike, and later on the Indiana Toll Road by Michigan City. He also helped to clear the land for Stewart Hall at the Tri-State University. As owner of Tri-Angle Earthmoving, Inc. for over 50 years, he worked extensively in the Angola area and focused mostly on sewer and water-line installation for municipalities in the later years. Only in 2006 did Max retire from his work after much persuasion from family members. Mr. Julian has been a member of the Angola Post #31 since 1949 and served his first office in 1965-66 as post adjutant, followed by commander in 1966-67. Max also served the Fourth District in many capacities from 1969 through 1975-76 when he took the office as 4th District Commander. He was presented with a life membership in 1975 and served in the Indiana State Department of the American Legion in several capacities until 1981-82 when he served as the Indiana State Department Commander. Most recently he has served on the Hoosier Boy's State committee where a "county" was named after him. Max was a member of the Ashley Masonic Lodge; the York Rite and the Mizpah Shrine Temple. He received a Sagamore of the Wabash Award in 1982 and was given an honorary life membership in ANAVICUS in 1987. He was a member of the Society of Indiana Pioneers. He was born March 21, 1927 in Auburn, Indiana to Paul Eugene and Blanche Lanetta (Clouse) Julian. Mr. Julian married Marilyn Canfield in 1948, Delores Ashville on October 13, 1951 in Wells County, Indiana, and Audree Mae Burch on June 20, 1955 in Elkhart, Indiana. Audree and Max celebrated their 45th anniversary in 2000 prior to Audree's death in September 2000. Max is survived by two sons Michael Julian of Angola, Indiana; Randy (Marla) Julian of Angola, Indiana; 2 daughters Cheryl (Tony) Brinkman of Cleves, Ohio and Michele (James) Kerr of Carmel, Indiana; a daughter-in-law Barbara Julian and his sister Janice (Cliff) Nilson of Angola, Indiana; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; his first wife Marilyn Julian of California and his second wife Delores Bennett of Harrison, Ohio.
