Max Manus tells a parallel story of Norway's greatest Second World War hero, a ruthless anti-Nazi whose military skills were learnt fighting with the Finns against the Soviet invaders in 1939 and 1940 and then honed with the Norwegian underground from the first days of the occupation until the liberation in May 1945. It's an exciting story that flits back and forth between a commando school at a Scottish castle, neutral Sweden and the streets of Oslo where the Gestapo perform with a ferocity that gets progressively worse as the imminence of German defeat becomes more obvious.another film that looks good, opinions if seen please.....

Hi Ray, is this a new movie? It certainly sounds like a good one and is about time that more stories about the war in Norway, gets a little publicity it so derserves.

As a Norwegian I have to say that there is a bit of wind tunneling in this flick. The Winter War scenes are disputed amongst Norwegian history buffs. Some argue that Max didn't see too much of the front line.

The early actions of the Oslo gang, were rather feeble. After the commando training in Aviemore they started to gain momentum.

The moral support for the population hower is indisputable. All actions (Linge, Oswald group, homefront) helped lift the spirits of the population.

Another important feature was setting up escape routes so people could go to Britain. For us here on the western shores, stealing boats and having a go was a possibility, but for other parts of the country going through to Sweden was the only option.

Hi Ray, heres a few-though they are in English.

The Heroes of Telemark-which has Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris in it as part of that Norwegian Commando/Resistance group, The Edge of Darkness with Errol Flynn, The Commandos Strike At Dawn w/ Paul Muni and there was another I am thinking of but can't recall the title at this time. The three named are excellent movies. The only one I am aware of that has been released on DvD is The Commandos Strike at Dawn.

Hi Ray, that they sure are ;-)) and I fully agree, NOBODY has come anywhere near as close to being as good as Flynn was as Robin Hood. Same goes for anyone playing the LAdy Marion Fitzwalter character - Olivia de Havilland. Because of that movie, I became a huge fan of both and for years-I had a huge crush on de Havilland. That lady was absolutely beautiful. I've always said that it was a darn shame that they never became an object and got married. Basil Rathbone was excellent as the Sheriff of Nottingham, as well as Alan Hale Sr. was excellent as Little John. This cast can and will never be beat. Also, did you know that Alan Hale Sr. is the only person to play the same character over three decades in three films ;-))

You can say that again. Also, those who appeared in many John Wayne and John Ford movies were called: The John Wayne (or) the John Ford, Stock Company.

They were all so very good. Also, for Alan Hale (Little John and Jr.s Daddy) if I recall, I THINK he passed away in 1950? and I THINK his last movie-or one of the last he made-was him playing Little John. Jr was the Gent who you mentioned as Casey Jones (I just barely remember this series) as well as better known as The Skipper on: Gilligans Island.

Now that it's been at least 20 or so years since I last watched an episode of Gilligans Island-I feel like watching some. Oh and, if you liked Bob Denver (Gilligan) he was absolutely great as Maynard G. Krebs on: The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Denver was also on a short-lived western comedy series called: Dusty's Trail-or something similar.

That's what I alwys felt about those two. They were so perfect for each other that they had to be Tailor-made. Same went for John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. Maureen-for her age-is still a VERY beautiful Woman.

As for Flynn and Robin Hood. One of my favorite quotes by him in the film is: "May I Obey All Your Commands With Equal Pleasure Sire!" This was at the very end of the movie when he had Lady Marion with him as they were slipping out the Castle hall.
