He did actually receive a medal for bravery(Bronze Star), however I do still believe his actions outside Bastogne were worthy of the Silver Star.
It's kinda doubtful. First off, I think someone whould have to write "his" congressman about it. In addition, it very likely would have to be someone who not only saw this action, but is a kind of an expert on the subject. Easy Co. vets, for example, could probably do it. My uncle and his buddies tried this type of thing for their CO, but never got very far.
By the way, check out http://64.227.84.79/bandofbrothers/ It is a discussion page started my Medic Roe's family....pretty kewel!!!!
Yeah Doc-I love that site-I visit it heaps-the FAQs are great-especially for all those out there (and I know there are several) who wanted Lt Speirs to tell the truth about what happened instead of dancing around like a wild Injun and not answering Lipton's question!!! DID HE DO IT OR NOT???????
Yeah Doc-I can't exactly say to them....LOOK, I WATCHED 'BAND OF BROTHERS' OK, I KNOW WHAT HAPPENED...'cause I would probably get a reply letter with a big laugh across it...guess bygones must be bygones... [ 18. January 2003, 05:36 AM: Message edited by: Panzerknacker ]
By the way, did you know that David Webster's book has recently been published? I'm waiting for it to get in here at the library so I can read it - BoB from another point of view.
It's called "Parachute Infantry". He tried to publish it in the 50s, but no one was interested. It was finally published after BoB got so big. It's pretty cool - it seems that his best buddy was Hubler, a relationship skipped in the program.
There are two editions of "Parachute Infantry" by David Kenyon Webster.I have the first edition (1994 by the Louisiana State University Press) and the second edition contains more of the story and more pics and "Letters to Home" from David. Another one of Webster's close friends was Robert "Burr" Smith (Burr was responsible for the start up of the Delta Teams).Webster and Burr jumped together over Normandy while with HQ-HQ Co. Later on,Webster would transfer to "Dog" Co. and than to "Easy" Co...Burr also transfered to "Easy" as a machine gunner. Hoobler was a friend to everyone as well as one of the best Paratroopers that the 101st had.
