My girlfriend bought me this medal for my birthday (not this particular one, I don't have a camera) the one I got is in rough shape, corroded etc. From what I've found, it's not worth much, but it's the first real relic of the war I've owned so it means alot to me. The guy at the store said it was dug up in Stalingrad...I'm just wondering how credible that is? probably just told my girl friend that so she would buy it. Can anyone tell me more about this medal? I know only that it was issued for service on the Russian front. Thanks
very common to all Landser serving on the Ost front as anyone if they would survive the years on the wasteland were deserving of it. they don't call it the "meat order" for nothing. the item was worn worn as a ribbon attached to the button hole with the EK 2 dominating with ribbon worn over it. The KVK 2 as well until EK 2 received then the KVK ribbon was removed. My good and belated friend H. Reichert serving as waffenmeister on the Ost front went through this system, though his EK 2 was never awarded to him in the final 2 months of the war, neither document either.
Speaking of the Frozen Meat Medal, my Arty Majors tunic has the ribbon for it as one of two in the 2nd buttonhole. One of the first items a WWII German Vet ever gave to me-was his Frozen meat Medal-which I still have. To me, that medal this former Artillery officer/NASA Scientist had, is worth millions. I not only know who this medal was awarded to-even without paper proof, but I know when he was awarded it, that it was his only momento he had left from the war, was also his most prized possession, and that I was the only person he ever considered giving it to. It may only be valued around $55 bucks if for sale on a dealers site but, Herr Steverdings FMM is priceless to me. I CAN provide bits of his stories he told to me about this item. This is unlike the vast majority of the FMMs out there.
I have one of these in really great shape, the ribbon is a little dirty..but my nephew got it in a box of trinkets he bought a garage sale and gave it to me. Now that I own one I see them all the time at gun shows and stuff...I had never seen one before.
I like east medals too GD , maybe not worth so much but its one of the types I never minded having several off. Dont take the sellers 'grounddug at Stalingrad' story too serious though (a grandma's old knittingbox 'dig' was more likely )
Of all the stuff I have, the Frozen Meat Medal I got as a gift from a former WWII German Artillery Officer and former NASA employeee who served under Werner von Braun-this not so valuable medal on the collecting market-to me is worth millions. Its also onething ill never sell-or get rid of for any other reason.
