I'm making a medals display for the WWII medals of my wife's grandfather. He was in the Navy aboard the Rudyerd Bay. From his service record I see that he was the following: AMM 3/c - Aviation machinist's mate 3rd class AMM 2/c - Aviation machinist's mate 2nd class ABM(GA) 2/c - Aviation Boatswain's Mates (gasoline systems) 2nd class ABM(GA) 1/c(T) - Aviation Boatswain's Mates (gasoline systems) 1st class (temporary) The patch on his uniform is an Aviation Machinists Mate patch 1/c. I'm trying to figure out why he would have a AMM 1/c patch and not a ABM patch. Could this be because he was an ABM 1/c temorary? View attachment 13206
It's possible they didn't have the right patches when he was promoted. So he got a jumper with something close, then sent it home when the right badge became available. Wartime expedient. That's a SWAG, btw, but something similar happened to me once. Got the wrong medal and was told to keep it when the right one came on board.
