need help with medal ID

I am trying to ID the medal in this picture. I have the ID of the ribbons of my grandfather but I cant find the medal. He was in the Navy (43-47) and NC National Guard (48-64). NOt sure it is even a mililtary related medal as he was also A shriner, Mason and serveal other organization. He passed away 9 years ago and as a formaer Marine I am trying to put a "shadow box" together for my father. Any help would be appreciated.

I am no expert but it may be a VFW medal.
