im writing a novel and (obviously) its set in the later stages of the battle of Stalingrad after the encirclment.
basically some red army soldiers (just infantry) have set up an outpost on the Don Steppe. they need a method of communicating with their divisional headquarters. and their headquarters need to communicate with them!

what sort of equipment would they have for this? would they have a small portable radio or would they need something more complex? would it be more of a telephone sort of machine, with telephone cables everywhere?
if you could tell me what device they would have and describe it for me (or a picture) that would be great!

    cheers
