I was wondering if someone could give me some details of the Rhineland and Northern France campaigns? Also, what did the 11th Infantry (Army) do during these campaigns? I ask because these are the campaigns my grandfather took part in and he was a member of the 11th Infantry division, so as he's not here to tell me...It'd be interesting to see what he went through or where he might've been. We only know he was in Luxembourg as there he was shot.

My grandfather's military record states he served as a Staff Sergeant in Company F of the 11th Infantry in the European theatre from February 1944 to March 1945 (actively from February '44 to January '45 as he was shot in the leg in January in Luxembourg in a sniper attack that took out several members of his unit). He enlisted in 1939 and served as a guard to the Panama Canal at Fort Kobbe until 1943 before being shipped to Europe but had requested to be sent overseas numerous times--And also requested to be transfered to the Paratrooper training corps at Fort Benning I believe, but was turned down. He wanted to be a member of the CAC but was sent to active duty as he had ''knowledge of the structure and organization'' of the military.

There was a ficticious 11th ID created as part of the pre-Normandy landings trickery to fool the Germans into thinking the invasion would take place at Calais: World War II unit histories & officers

There was an 11th Inf. Regiment, part of the 5th ID, which I believe is what you're looking for. A search didn't turn up much but maybe you can start here: Roster of the 11th INFANTRY REGIMENT, WWII

Here's a good link to the 5th ID: 5th Infantry Division, WWII
Looks like good info here, definitely has unit battle history. The 5th was a major player in the battle at Metz, France. My Dad's unit was also there, attached to the 90th & 95th ID's. This book has loads of narrative on the 5th, check out chapters 3 and 9: http://www.history.army.mil/books/wwii/lorraine/lorraine-content.html

    Good luck.
