Part of Plymouth city centre has been evacuated after builders discovered a Second World War bomb, police said.

The unexploded device was found on Thursday afternoon when workmen spotted the partially-buried device while carrying out building works.

Wartime bomb made safe after city evacuation - National - Lynn News

The bomb was safely detonated in a controlled explosion off Cawsand Bay, south west of Plymouth Sound. The Royal Navy's Devonport-based bomb disposal team used divers to place explosive charges underwater to successfully destroy the bomb. A Royal Navy spokeswoman said the bomb was detonated at 10.30am but further explosives were needed at 11.51am to ensure it had been completely destroyed.
