Hello! My dad, who is 90, was captured in late November 1944 and was interred in at least two German POW camps until his liberation. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration website shows this information about his time as a POW: Field Title = Camp Value = 063 Meaning = Stalag 12A to 9B Limburg An Der Lahn Hessen-Nassaur, Prussia 50-08 He told me that he never knew where the first camp was located, but he thought the second one was close to Dresden. After the last camp near Dresden was liberated by the Russian Army, my dad and some of his fellow POWs had to walk to Prague, Chechoslovakia before they were able to rejoin American forces. I'm trying to decipher the "Stalag 12A to 9B Limburg An Der Lahn Hessen-Nassaur, Prussia 50-08" listing. I found info on Stalag 12A, but the location of Stalag 9B is not in an area near Dresden. Can anyone help me to interpret the listing correctly? He was in Company B, 318th Infantry. I think that was part of the 80th Division, but I'm not sure. Are there resources online to find more information about my dad's military service in WWII? I would also love to find some after action reports on my dad's company. Thanks!
Here are a couple of very good maps showing the locations of the POW camps: http://www.bobpenoyer.com/POW_Camps.gif http://www.merkki.com/images/powcampsingermanymap.jpg You can download them or just open them in your browser. If you do the latter, click on the map to zoom in. To find Stalags 12A and 9B, find Luxembourg and move east. Stalag 12A is near Limburg. Stalag 9B is near Bad Orb. Neither were anywhere near Dresden. My great uncle's Tank Destroyer Company was part of a task force sent to liberate Stalag 9B. 44th Infantry Division: Stalag IX-B Some good information on Stalag 9b here.
