Ya gotta love the wartime and immediate postwar propaganda documentaries. For many they constitute the bulk of popular "knowledge" about WW2 facts and figures, erroneous misconceptions to say the least.

Got myself a great couple put together by the 8th Air Force during the final months of hostilities. Has some terrific quotes along with plenty of war department footage spanning late44-45 from the looks of it.

"Our escorts are fighting odds of 2 or 10 to one and coming out with a four to one victory ratio." (amid gun camera footage of shot down German fighters either laden with drop tanks or flying low and slow with the evasive abilities of a first time cadet)

"Heavily outnumbered they take on the massed German fighters, but a mission has never been turned back by enemy action." (could be because orders are for the bombers to keep going regardless of attrition)

"This captured footage shows the toll taken by German 22mm gunfire, this bomber has had his tail half shot off but keeps flying." (actually it's 20mm, 13mm and 30mm gunfire and the Fortress had its tail shot away by a ground based heavy flak gun, though a few 30mm mine shells are almost as devastating)

"The pilots write their mission briefing notes on the back or palms of their hands." (answers a few question marks about entire squadrons going missing, seriously during the war entire squadrons were lost without a trace like Flight 19 out of Britain, falling into the attrition category of "engine trouble and navigational error" or "unaccounted for" as opposed to "enemy action")

I wanted to start a fun thread, for a bit of a laff about silly things said in propaganda docos.
Anybody seen those "Why we Fight" films? I mean if they were released in German language I'd have thought the Nazis made them. Germans are racially violent? Soviets are racially partisan? Christ.

I've got another one released by Fighter Command during 1943 which ought to be interesting, I haven't watched it yet.

Tell me about the crazy propaganda docos you've watched :)
