Hello everyone, I have a general query regarding Throney Island air base during World War 2. I have a man named Neil Dallas who was a flight officer during WW2 that I'm trying to research some more detail on. I have an Obit published in 1950 (posted elsewhere on site) which gives him as a Flight Sergeant at the time of his passing. I have since found a marriage record dated 15th Feb 1941 which records him as a Corporal with the RAF. His residence is given as Thorney Island, and there are 2 other words in this box which I can't make out. The second looks like "Hants", I'm assuming the county/parish. Is there somewhere I can look - website/book etc - which gives more details on what role the airfield and men had during WW2? I did a search on Wiki and 3 squadrons are listed as having their base there - 59; 404 and 407. I'm wondering how accurate that information may be. Things seem to be split between them as anti-sub & bombing raids; reconnaissance; coastal patrol/attacks. Where do I go from here? A very vague question, I know, but any advice is greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Steven (Forgive any spelling mistakes. My typing leaves a lot to be desired !!
Thorney Island is indeed in 'Hants' which is the abbreviation for the English county of Hampshire, and is near the Naval base city of Portsmouth. There is now an Army base (well, there was the last time I went there a few years ago) located on the former RAF Station. I don't know the details of the RAF Stations history but I believe that at some point there were Typhoon squadrons of the 2 Tactical Air Force based there.
