I am aware of it, although I believe you are entirely correct and it did not progress beyond prototype stage, I believe the German advance through Belgium prevented any further development. A poster on another Website has a quite impressive personal database of aviation facts and figures, I will ask him your question and pass on any information.

The R-38 was basically a re-engined R-36, a Rolls-Royce Merlin II replacing the latters Hispano-Suiza 12Ycrs. Only one prototype of the R-38 was ever built, it flew for the first time on August 4 1939 and its test programme was still in process when the Germans occupied Belgium. The R-38 escaped to Bordeaux, but was scrapped by the Germans after the fall of France.

The proposed armament for the R-38 was either four 7.7mm or four 13.2mm machine guns to be mounted in the wings. I have never seen a picture of the R-38 which suggest that any of these proposals were carried through. Its performace was rated as follows ( possibly without armament ); Max speed : 545km/h at 5000m, Time to 5000m : 5.37 min, Max range : 1350km.

It should be mentioned that the procurement of the R-36 was abandoned in favour of the Hawker Hurricane.

Good idea. Always best to go with the tried and true in emergency situations, unless the t and t has somehow failed.

Now that you mention it, there does appear to be a resemblance.
