Good evening, All ... I'm helping a friend do some research into the medals that were presented to a Bataan Death March survivor. Between the two of us we've managed to ID all but one. I've attached a photo and hope that someone out there has a clue what the medal in the highlighted circle might be. My thought was that it had something to do with the Phillippines because it is mounted next to other Phillippine-related medals. But I have found absolutely nothing that is even close. Thanks in advance for your help - maybe I can return the favor sometime.
Hi, Brad - The one at lower LEFT below the UN medal (the one with narrow blue & white stripes) is a VFW Commemorative medal ... if you mean the one at lower RIGHT below the World War II Victory medal, I'll have to check with the friend I'm helping ... it looks to me like the Vietnam Service medal, but it isn't one of the ones I was tasked with researching. Thanks for your interest.
Forgive me I am a carpenter and left is sometime right. The medal I asked about was the topic in another thread and that was the consensus of it being a VFW ribbon. As for the medal you asked about it I can not find an exact match. Do you have a clearer picture? I have seen similar ribbons and there is usually an inscription on the back. I'll keep looking.
Hey, I married a feller with sawdust in his veins, so I understand perfectly .... Here's where I found the ID for the VFW medal: Battle of Bataan.com:::Medals I'll check with Benny and see if he has any other photos. Mine is a copy of a printout on regular (not photo) paper, so I know it's not the best. Back in a day or two - thanks for the help!
the one on the upper left corner is the bronze star, next to it is the Purple heart, I also recognize the air medal (blue and orange) and the pilot wings (the 2 wings above). This grouping apparently belonged to to an airman. I also see the european air offensive one (french and Itlaina flags on light blue back ground)
Well, that didn't take long! The mystery of the unidentifiable WWII medal has been solved. The one I couldn't come up with (just to the right of the silver wings in the top row) is the Philippine equivalent of our Purple Heart, the Wounded Personnel Medal. It looks tan with a maroon stripe in the photo, but is actually white with a purple stripe. So, to close out this thread, I'd like to thank everyone who contributed, and identify all the medals in the photo, for future reference. Clockwise, from lower left: VFW Commemorative Medal United Nations Service Medal (Korea) Army Good Conduct Medal American Defense Service Medal Bronze Star Purple Heart POW Medal Air Medal Asiatic-Pacific Campaign (WWII) Air Force Air Crew Wings Philippine Wounded Personnel Medal Philippine Independence Medal Philippine Liberation Medal Philippine Defense Medal Air Force Good Conduct Medal National Defense Service Medal World War II Victory Medal Vietnam Service Medal Presidential Citation (w/ 2 stars or oak leaves, can't tell) Outstanding Unit Award (ditto above) The gentleman for whom I'm doing the research is writing a story about the Bataan Death March survivor (now deceased) who received all these awards. Maybe he'll let me share it with you when it's finished. In the meantime, God Bless, and thank all you Veterans out there for your service to our country. Hate to think where we'd be today if you hadn't been willing and able to serve on our behalf. Sincerely, Libraryelf A grateful American (and American Legion Auxiliary member) in Arkansas
