Hi, I am a newbie to this forum. I retired a couple of years ago having worked for a Rolls-Royce car dealership in the South of England for many years. Now I have time on my hands, I am tempted to write a small book.I havw always been fascinated by the quality of R-R engines both aviation and automotive. My special interest is when R-R engines have been used in machinery for which they were not originally intended, for example, the good old Merlin was originally designed to power aircraft but has been used in cars, tractors, powerboats etc.......the more obscure the use, the greater level of interest I have in it. Does anyone know of any really remarkable uses that not just the Merlin but also other R-R engines have been put to ? Ted.
I would be extremely interested to see drawings (if you have any that is) of the Meteor (Merlin for tanks). The only "unusual" one that springs to mind immediately is The Beast, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merlin_engine bottom of the page. Unfortunately I missed seeing that car (twice!) at Santa Pod. IIRC the quality was to do with RR using shaft-based tolerances rather than hole-based like most engineering firms. PS, welcome.
