BBC News 24 has been reporting odds and sods on it since this morning Martin. Sky have it on their news website, don't know if they have mentioned it on air though.

What an epic confrontation in a city which will never be forgotten nor should it be.

Glad the world has not forgotten. :)

Is this another example of the "cleaning" of the reputation of josepf stalin?

Congratulations aside for the victory, why on earth would anyone want to rename this place after that tyrant, even only on commemoration days?

For that matter, why not revert to the original name that Russians had for this place, before the days of revolution...Tsaritsyn?

After all, the depredations of the Czars were nothing compared to the crimes committed by the Paradise of Workers and Peasants. Why conjure up memories of a man who rightly belongs in the toilet bowl of history?

I very much doubt that the temporary re-naming of the city is to somehow signify Stalin. Instead, (IMO) it is celebrate the victory over Germany. Stalingrad could have been named "Bob" and the name change would proceed.

I would say a great victory for the hard fighting Soviet troops, and some help with American logistics. What the allies did in the west was significant, but what the Soviets did on the Eastern front was what won the war in Europe.

So the Russians were not part of the allied setup? Allies..OK, then...NOT a great victory ofr the Allies over Nazi Germany. You should search the forum database on the majority view on here on the war in the East. Your view which is same as mine is nothing new. We've been saying that on here for years. Welcome to the site...There is a tremendously good search engine at the top of the page. Have fun with it.
