I hope that this film gets a UK release, even if it is limited, as I'd like to see how the Bulge is depicted. Budget must have been very low, I've never heard of any of the actors, especially the British (?) one.....
Always interested in WW2 films! Now, well, what could that be?? If this is the situation after Malmedy?
I noticed that too, Kai....also I'd have doubted that the Germans would have had much time to 'comb the area'..... But I'm hoping that it's just a dumb preview and I'm prepared to give the film the benfit of the doubt until I can see it.
I just saw the last half of this movie, I'm not sure how accurate the historical details are. "The Bulge" is'nt an area I have spent a lot of time studying yet . But, the story behind the story, of the soldiers interacting with each other is GREAT!
It was on the History Channel on Memorial day. Unfortunately I didn't see the whole thing. It was pretty good from what I saw aside from the actors. I thought they were a bit too old for the parts.
I've seen this just yesterday. Not the most epic film ever, but very good. I enjoyed the story even though it wasn't the most historically accuarate. It's one of the few films I've seen where I don't want to see the characters fight, I want them to make it to safety. It was certainly a little diferent take on the concept of the war film.
Yes, the film was quite "enjoyable". Just found it yesterday. Malmedy itself was filmed as "an accident" where a GI tries to get a gun and the Germans after a fired shot at them start shooting all the GI´s in the field. I guess this is the first time it was not shown as intended butchery. However the neck shots after the incident looked rather "evil"... Anyway, one of the rare movies where even the spoken parts are rather ok to watch. Not much fighting but I´ll give it 8 out of 10. And the top secret info ( by the RAF pilot ) does seem rather useless because the operation is already on the loose so that one did look rather out of picture in the film. the main idea of the movie seems to be that not everyone is all bad ( even in war ) as the movie ends with a GI medic helping a wounded Waffen-SS soldier ( noticeable for the sleeve eagle ) because he himself was helped out of trouble by a Wehrmacht soldier earlier in the movie...
I bought this movie a long time ago. And it is a great "little" war film. Its a good 'date' war movie, if you catch my meaning.
I don't think that this movie ever got a UK release - but browsing the shops in London today, found a pile of cut-price 2-CD sets of 'Saints & Soldiers' including a docu about Malmedy, interviews with the film''s actors and advisors, etc. Looking forward to sitting down and watching this over the holidays.....
I watched it a year ago, and I think it was a very good movie. I'd like to see it again. As far as I remember the facts were on target for the most part, but you can't nail 'em all down or it'll be a documentary in my book.
Sorry if I'm gravedigging, but I had to comment on this film, since I met both the director and producer of the film. This film has become my number one favorite WWII film (which is strange, because I've seen quite a few). The budget they had was practically nonexistant (they made the entire film under $1 million, which is unheard of for a period piece). Yes the actors could have been better, and yes not all of the historical facts were 100% accurate, but the movie brought a human quality to it that has been missing from so many WWII films. I think I've only seen two or three other WWII films that portray the Germans as actual human beings, and really develop the characters into people you can relate with. I may be biased, but it's still my top favorite.
Never seen it nor never heard of it for that matter. Is it more of a character driven movie than a action yarn? I guess I need to look into it further.
It was worth watching, and I enjoyed it very much. I am not familiar with the Belgian terrain, but I do know it is part of an area called "The Low Countries." This movie, and I know it was low budget but well made concerning what they had to work with and no big name actors, was filmed near Park City, Utah. Sort of a mountainous ski area. I thought of this factor and got a chuckle as I saw the mountains in the background, and remembering similar scenes in "The Battle of the Bulge." I liked both of them.
I didn't like the film- I thought the script was rather a mess and the acting mostly mediocre to poor. The technical details were very "off".
