    KUNKLE,OHIO — Sherman William “Bill” Apt, 88, of Kunkle, Ohio, died Sunday afternoon, September 13, 2009 in his home following a lingering illness.

    He was born June 21, 1921 at Kunkle to Mary Elizabeth Fortney and Robert Blair Apt, and was a lifelong Kunkle resident, and was a 1940 graduate of Kunkle High School.

    On July 5, 1947 he was married to Willamine B. “Billie” Rumsey and she survives.

    Bill had retired in 1980 as a welder with the Norfolk and Southern Railroad where he had been employed for 37 years.



    He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in Rhineland, Ardennes, and Northern France, during which he participated in the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach in Normandy. He had been awarded five bronze stars, one bronze arrowhead, and one silver star, all for gallantry and heroism.

    Bill was a member of the Kunkle United Brethren Church and the Pioneer American Legion Post #307.

    Also surviving are, two sons, Gary S. Apt of Kunkle, Danny L. (Nancy) Apt, Bryan; two grandchildren, Jason Apt (Alisa Phomsaeavanh), Columbus, Ohio, and Amber D. Apt (Mark Oyer Jr), Bryan; one brother, Norman Apt, Bowling Green, Ohio, and one sister, Mary Ellen Papp, Montpelier.

    Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were one infant daughter, Jane R. Apt; five brothers, Edgar “Micky”, John, Robert, Kenneth and Paul Apt; two sisters, infant Ruth Lenore Apt and Margaret Roose.

    Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. in Wilson – Geesey Funeral Home, Montpelier. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Reverend Ronald Evans and Reverend Devon Strine officiating. Burial will be in Kunkle Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by Pioneer American Legion Post #307. Preferred Memorials are to Kunkle United Brethren Church or Hospice of Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers.
