OKAY. I'm going NUTS looking for what medal and or award this is for.. it looks like it is green and white but when I turn it over it looks green and yellow.. can you guys help me again.. my gram found it in my Pa's stuff and I am hoping that I did not miss something that needs to be in his shadow box.. my uncle was in the Navy also durnig NAM I can't find this in either...
Is this it? Although the width of the bars seems different. If so, it's a Coast Guard Commendation Award. I found it here, through trial and error. Coast Guard Ribbon Checker I think the stars indicate multiple awards.
Since you mentioned it "looked yellow" on the back, perhaps the color has faded from yellow/gold to "whitish"? If is was originally a yellow/gold color it might be some sort of ribbon for a National Guard service time or something. I saw a green and gold ribbon like that once upon a time (I think) and it was on a uniform of a guy from Vermont. Just a thought.
I believe Lou is right and that it's a Coast Guard Commemorative medal with three citations , the yelow comes from fading.
There was once, I think now obsolete, New Mexico NG recruiting ribbon that was green with three equal sized/spaced yellow bars not unlike the ribbon shown
Just curious but, isn't the Green and Yellow colors that of the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry???? It's been ages since I last saw one so-I don't know if im even in the ball park on this one?
Was any in the Oklahoma National Guard for 30 years? Oklahoma National Guard Ribbons (Model #:7652-NG3616)
I don't believe that it's the Coast Guard Commendation Medal nor the RVN Campaign Medal. It's also not a WWII campaign ribbon. I have a gut feeling that it's a foreign award but can't pin it down. Sandie, we need a tad more info...was it in your grandad's things...Did it belong to someone else...etc.??
I think Slip is closest...as far as looks. The stars on it, well that could be a mistake. Once I bought a lot of US awards on Ebay...the Purple Heart Ribbon I was sent had 3 bronze stars on it. To signify mulitple awards it would be oak leaves. So it could be the ONG ribbon...thats the only thing posted that seems right.
Nope he was in the National Guard before he went into service but only a few months and then he was drafted. I thought it might be my uncle's but he was not either.. I guess I will never figure it out.. I will ask Pa about it after the services.. maybe he will know.. Thank you again for all the help.. I too was thinking maybe it was a forgein award that is no longer seen...
Luke - Don't forget that in the naval services additional awards are denoted by stars. So, it is possible that the PH ribbon you received with 3 stars could have been someone either Navy or Marine Corps who was wounded in four separate actions. Rich
