Was wondering what the 11th Infantry did in World War II? My Grandpa was a Staff Sgt. in the 11th Infantry (Company F), under Gen. Partton. Would there be any way to find the names of the men he served with in his company or unit?

I'm also havng trouble finding any information about this infantry division. My father was in Co H 11th or 15th Infantry depending on which discharge paper I'm looking at. On one site it said these two Infantries did not exist in WWII and another site said the 11th was a fake one to fool the Germans into thinking the invasion would begin at Calais. Need help!

Hi Gramhottie. Welcome to the forum. Check this thread for information on the 11th Infantry. http://www.ww2f.com/topic/23960-11th-infantry-division-co-f/
    Here's something on the 15th
On February 15, 1942, the 15th Infantry Regiment was assigned the duty of defending the Washington coastline from Seattle to Canada. In May 1942 orders arrived for the regiment to move to Fort Ord. The soldiers received additional training to become combat ready. In September the regiment was sent to Camp Pickett, Virginia, to await overseas shipment. On October 24, 1942, the 15th departed from Norfolk, Virginia, as part of the 3rd Infantry Division, bound for French Morocco. The regimental combat actions were Fedala, North Africa, with an assault on November 8, 1942; Licata, Sicily, on July 10, 1943; Salerno, Italy, September 18, 1943; Anzio, Italy, landing January 22, 1944; Southern France operations August 15, 1944; entering Germany on March 13, 1945, and arriving in Austria on May 5, 1945. The regiment spent 31 months in combat.

The 11th Infantry Regiment was a part of the 5th Infantry Division in WWII. The 5th Division was in the Third Army, commanded by Gen. Patton. It landed in France at Normandy on July 9, 1944.
It was also a part of the 5th Div in WWI, and again during the Vietnam War.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post. On reading over the information on the 15th Infantry I don't believe he was in that one. His discharge papers said he was in Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He didn't arrive in Europe until Aug of 1944. Thank you to LRusso216 for the picture of the unit insignia for the 11th. Does anyone know of any books written about the 11th Infantry and their service in WWII?

Regimental histories are often hard to find and usually very expensive. Division histories tend to be less so. There are reprints out there, but they are usually in the $30 - $45 range. Battery Press has published a reprint of The 5th Infantry Division in the ETO, but it is currently out of print. You could take the info from the Battery Press website and see if your local library can find a copy.

You could also try the Society of the Fifth Division for suggestions. They have a Recommended Reading section on their website that may help with your research. Their bibliography covers the entire history of the 5th from the Civil War through Vietnam and they aren't necessarily organized chronologically, so caveat emptor.
