On september 11th 1944 a patrol from the 85th Cavalry of the 5th Armoured Division, commanded by Sergeant Warner w. Holzinger were the first Allied soldiers to set foot into Nazi Germany. The six men strong patrol crossed the Our river in Stolzemburg, Luxembourg to reach Keppeshausen on the german side. They pushed their reconnaissance into the hills of the Our valley and found some Westwall bunkers that were not manned by the Wehrmacht, before returning into the US lines. Today a small monument remembers their feat.
