Hi folks, Does anyone know if the 'Screaming Meemies', the Nebelwerfer 41 Battery at WN67, Omaha Beach, were actually FIRED on D-Day? I've heard and read of at least two separate accounts, by esteemed Vets like Bob Slaughter, that said they were fired on D-Day, but other historical pages on the Internet state they weren't, as the rockets hadn't arrived yet. Does anyone out there know the answer to this little riddle of D-Day? Is it just inaccurate original accounts being given prominence by 'Official Military' accounts of the time, and in turn pronounced as fact by some ignorant websites? I'll believe Bob Slaughter's memory of them any day; he talks of hearing the 'zoop zoop zoop' of them and actually 'following the rockets high trajectory to their targets on the beach!'. He was there, I'll believe him thanks. But why does this inconsistency exist? ' Peace and Love.
DonĀ“t recall if we have discussed this aspect before, but here is some info... Axis History Forum • View topic - Nebelwerfers at Omaha Beach
Kai-Petri, Thanks for your reply and help. That link was just what I was looking for, those wooden-launchers certainly fired their 32cm rockets on D-Day, but from a pit, not from the barrelled rocket launchers which we see in most pictures and film of the NebelWerfers. 4 rockets were fired at a time, and they had a longer reload time than the barrel launched Nebelwerfer. Still, the quantity of fire coming from WN67 onto the Les Moulins area must have been terrifying! Thanks again.
