You probably didn't know that the only surviving residence of Benjamin Franklin is very close by, at 36 Craven Street. His Philadelphia home was torn down in the 1800s
Benjamin Franklin has long been my favorite of the early group of people that formed our government. I have tried to live my life based on moderation in all things and wish our government, past and present did too !!! Most interesting fellow.
if you like Benjamin Franklin you'll have to visit Paris where he is honored too , (He was the U.S embassador at Versailles during the Independence War. )
You learn something new everyday on this Forum. I knew Franklin was almost as popular as Jerry Lewis in France , but I didn't know there were schools named after him. The Washington statue at Trafalgar Square was a complete surprise to me. And, as KB pointed out, even the British pigeons are so in awe they can't bring themselves to "powder his wig".
Skipper, Indeed , I ran across it accidentally many years ago, making my way to the Bois de Boulogne and came upon it in Yorktown Square or would that be Square Yorktown, being in France ! The French played a major roll in that Battle which essentially ended the war. Franklin seemed to be pivotal in gaining French support for our fore bearers. One of the many reasons I admire him. You'll find statues and monuments to many Americans in Britain...You'd be surprised by how many we have. We seem to be quite fond of the old colonials.
I saw this while visiting a museum in Britanny. This statue wa smade by local scholl children as a tribute to Benjamin Franklin. I think it's gorgeous.
July 4th 2015... I was due in London that summer every Saturday night in Soho to promote, and that being his house, I ran from mine to his (just to say I did); (because I could). https://runkeeper.com/user/2056032784/activity/605846415 When I got there I enjoyed the view, thought about my American family and their American families, and... Went to work. It's literally near Heaven (the nightclub) and Charing Cross. Here's that picture I took of my run Just incase RunKeeper won't let you see it.
I didn't know he was there either. Just looked it up. http://www.londonremembers.com/memorials/george-washington Presented to the people of Great Britain and Ireland by the Commonwealth of Virginia, 1921. The marble original is in Richmond, Virginia, USA. This bronze copy was presented by the Commonwealth of Virginia. There is a story that, since Washington once said he would never stand on English ground, this statue was supplied with some good ol' American soil on which to stand.
... Like people don't know that just down the road (Whitehall) at Parliament Square in and amongst the Churchill Statue and Gandhi Statue and the Nelson Mandela Statue is the Abraham Lincoln Statue;
One thing our capital is not short on. Statues. Reagan & Ike in Grosvenor Square, London: (I always think the Ike one looks just a little camp...)
The French also had an 80-gun ship of the line named Franklin, built during the Revolution but soon captured by Nelson at the Nile. She was taken in to the Royal Navy and served through the Napoleonic Wars, but the name was considered inappropriate so she became HMS Canopus. The was an exception to the usual practice of captured ships retaining their names.
