Thank you for looking after this man's grave. I appreciate it greatly. That is not a common name, finding him might not be as hard if his name was something like "James Smith." I'll see if I can find anything.
Here are some leads on him: http://www.fieldsofhonor-database.com/index.php/american-war-cemetery-margraten-f/47487-fizet-nick Born: 1922, Ohio Hometown: Trumbull County, Ohio Family: Dan Fizet (father) Anna Fizet (mother) Stephen Fizet (brother) Edward Fizet (brother) Thomas Fizet (brother) Charles Fizet (brother) Helen Fizet (sister) Carl Fizet (brother) George Fizet (brother) Here is a link to Trumball County. There links there to governmental offices. They may can direct you to family if they are still living in the area. I would think odds would be good, considering he had several siblings. http://www.co.trumbull.oh.us/ Here he is in the 1940 census, listing children, who may very well be alive. http://www.ancestry.com/1940-census/usa/Ohio/Nick-Fizet_16kwj3
Way to go Jeff. Note he died in Prussia , in this case the the Baltic sea ("under German control" convoy, so as a Pow?). It would be interesting to find out which ship sank there on 24 march 1945 There is a name of a German merchant ship here that could fit : http://www.wio.ru/fleet/sunk/baltic.htm 4 March 1945 German merchant Butyardingen (466tons) sunk.
From the 203rd AAA Bn WWII Deaths list: Here is his page on the NARA Electronic POW Database: Fizet, Nick, PFC The NARA Status #4 is a little confusing because it applies to multiple possible situations: [ Note: the letters in parentheses were added by me] The only other option available for a POW death is #5 "Died as Prisoner of War, Not Above Cases". I think it is more likely that the entry is meant to indicate he was executed (option a) while a POW at Stalag 12A. The 7th AD website has a link to a downloadable PDF of the unit history for the 203rd AAA (AW) Battalion. The PDF is over 39 MB. From page 49 of the unit history (PDF page 26): The Memorial section of the unit history indicates his home town was Girard, Ohio.
So the files don't actually know anything. They say died in a ship OR died in a Stalag. Those are 2 entire different things. Could it be he was on the run from a Stalag and went on board of a ship?
I agree that the NARA POW Status descriptions are of limited use in determining specifically what happened to a particular POW. If all we had was the NARA Status, I would say that scenario is possible. However, the list of 203rd AAA Bn WWII deaths that I quoted above says he died: "March 24, 1945 at Burgsolm, Germany [There is no Burgsolm. It was probably Solms (referred to as Burg Solms) east of Limburg (Limburg was Stalag XII-A), since he is listed as one of those US personnel who died at XII-A in the period Jan-Mar 1945.]" I'm not clear on where they got that information, but I presume they did not pull "Burgsolm" out of thin air. Still, I am only making conditional conclusions which are subject to change if additional or better information is found. BTW, there actually is a Burgsolms, Germany. The Wiki refers to it as a "constituent community" of the town Solms, Germany. Burgsolms shows up if you zoom in on Solms in Google Maps. Solms is located about 20 miles NE of Limburg, Germany.
I talked with his brother on the phone that night. He said the OP could call him directly...if he ever checks this thread again.
