Medgar Evers Navy Ship: Widow Myrlie Evers-Williams Reflects on the Honor I can think of no greater tribute than to have my country which stands for the very ideals for which this hero's life was taken than to memorialize his dedication in such a way. And for the US Navy, with its proud and gallant struggle to implement these ideals for all ratings on a merit basis, well, that's just about as good as it can get. Hear, hear America!
Again, I am inspired by the WWII veteran who could have realized how lacking the justice was and turned away from the country but instead, partook of the dreams our constitution inspires, knowing we can be made "better" as a country, and had enough love for his country to take brave steps in that direction. It is fitting that a life such as this be recognized for what he stood for. I think as we recognize him we also should recognize those as active in the background of history, as there were many that worked for similar things who did not make the headlines, that worked for change when there was little recognition for their efforts......such as Tuskeegee airmen that just did formidable duties to contribute, or perhaps, the "ladies" that worked in the factories for our war time production.....we have so many we can admire, who were likewise performing for their country at their own peril as Medgar Evans.....who became a martyr for having served us by trying to better our ways.
