Has anyone had a relative who had served on the MT VERNON in 1943/44 in the Pacific area? I would like some background info on the crew's activities while they were on stopover in New Zealand.

My father was an ensign on the Mt Vernon during 1943 and part of 1944. I was reading one of his lettes that he wrote my mother on 2/22/44 - and he mentions going ashore and going for a hike in the jungle. I also seem to remember some pictures i saw many years ago that he had taken of the native women, in their native (and brief) costumes. Also mentioned were church services and movies on board ship. In his letters he also talks about the layover in Hawaii - and the time he spent onshore there.

Did your father mention the names of other men on board his ship? I'm looking for a man named Harry Prestegard who served on the Mt Vernon during 1943 but I lost track of him during 1944.

He rarely mentioned anything about WWII - but i have found letters my father wrote my mother, and i still have about a 6 inch stack to go thru. So far the only people he has mentioned are 'brother officers" of, i assume, the same rank. I will keep an eye out as i convert his letters to word.doc form.
