Word At War. The 20th Century (the original one which had Walter Cronkite as the narrator. The Eagle and the Bear. Secrets of War which was narrated by the late great Charlton Heston. Battleline-which was from the viewpoints of soldiers who fought against each other.
The Lost Evidence (A good reminder of a time when THC churned out some watchable stuff) Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain The Color of War series Hell in the Pacific (One of the interviewees was the late Eugene Sledge) Pearl Harbor: Legacy of Attack, The Battle for Midway and the Lost Fleet of Guadalcanal (National Geographic) Sink the Bismarck! (A&E doc. This one riveted me as a kid. A shame it has never been released on DVD.) Wings Of the Luftwaffe (I often watch this on the Military Channel) Air Power (Also narrated by Cronkite. For it's age, it still holds up rather well) Ten Days to Victory (The re-enactments make it look like a docudrama, but it's still worth a viewing) Stalingrad (2003 three-part doc) Crusade in the Pacific Through Hell for Hitler (Timewatch doc about the experiences of a Panzer driver who served in Russia. Quite eye-opening) How Hitler Lost the War U-Boat (Three part doc also released under the title U-Boat War)
To those great suggestions I would only add the Ken Burns' documentary The War, and the other Military Channel segment called Wings of The Red Star. Victory at Sea still holds up pretty well too.
Apocalypse: The Second World War A&E- Battle Of The Bulge WW2 in HD Generals At War Battlefield Detectives- Battle Of The Bulge Battlefield Detectives- Pointe Du Hoc Shootout- (The WW2 episodes are good) The Lost Evidence Nazi Hunters- 13 Episodes on the hunt for Nazi war criminals Blitz Street A&E- The Bombing of Germany Shooting War- World War 2 Combat Cameramen World War 2- The Lost Color Archives Nova- The Great Escape The Great Escape: The Reckoning- (Tells of the hunt for who killed the 50) Death In The Bunker: The True Story of Hitler's Downfall Nova- The Hunt For Hitler's Scientists Timewatch- Inside The Mind of Adolf Hitler Nova- Hitler's Sunken Secret Hitler's Private World National Geographic- 42 Ways to Kill Hitler (aka Killing Hitler) National Geographic- Hitler's Hidden City (aka Hitler's Secret Bunkers) National Geographic- Hitler's Secret Weapons National Geographic- Hitler's Stealth Fighter National Geographic- Convoy: War For The Atlantic (4 part series) National Geographic- Omaha Beach: The Real Horror National Geographic- The Hunt For Hitler Bloody Omaha 10 Days To D-Day D-Day 6.6.44 D-Day In Color D-Day To Berlin (BBC version is better than the History Channel version)
Oh.. I have forgotten Apocalypse: The Second World War Also I still need to watch The World at War, it's 25 euros in a box in a shop here..
The World at War was great. The War is great also. Both appeal to me because they show the effect of the war on common people. Would Band of Brothers qualify as a documentary?
This is one of my favorite Youtube channels. LOADED with good documentaries. YouTube - 20thCenturyWar's Channel
Sadly, that channel for suspended. However, here's some other good Youtube channels: YouTube - kingtiger88's Channel YouTube - KoLo2071's Channel YouTube - HoustonGD's Channel YouTube - Peken73's Channel
Just started watching that series and it's very good. Guess I'll just have to wait for that episode to come around again. Thank you very much!
Battlefield Series One, narrated by Tim Piggot Smith, which for some disturbing reason has not been released in NTSC format on DVD in the US. World At War narrated by Sir Laurence Olivier Wings of the Luftwaffe Hitler's Body Guards Auschwitz: Inside the Nazi State narrated by Linda Hunt
Funny thing... I just searched my TV guide on the DVR and lo and behold Turning points in History is playing "Raid On Dieppe" on June 23rd! Great timing and thanks again! Were there movies made on Dieppe too?
There was a CBC two part miniseries released in 1993 about the raid. Most of the actors I am not familiar with, but the two that I can recall are Victor Garber (Playing Lord Mountbatten), and Aidan Devine (He also starred in that miniseries about the Avro Arrow and that CBC Heritage Minute about "Valor Road"). The production value is a little low (No surprise considering it was made for TV), and only the Royal Regiment of Canada's assault on Puys is depicted, but nevertheless I still liked it. Also, the romantic fluff is there, but it's kept low thankfully. The film is available on DVD.
For suspended? WOW, that's some great English there! Got suspended I meant. Excellent series on Auschwitz. That brought some tears out of me. I don't know. Youtube can be a pain sometimes, but usually if one channel goes down, another pops up soon after with some of the deleted videos.
