Without any doubt, hands down, mine is: "Decision Before Dawn" w/ Richard Basehart (Lt Rennick) Oscar Werner (LW Medical Corporal Karl Maurer (aka) "Happy" Gary Merrill as the American Colonel, Hans-Christian Blech as "Tiger" O.E.Hasse as the Panzer Colonel, Til Kiwi as his Adjutant, Hildegard Neff as the sympathetic Soldatenheim Girl, Klaus Kinski as the whining soldier (small part) and Wilfrid Seyffarth as the SS Special Courier) Hands down, this is my all-time most favorite War Movie. Not a whole-heck of alot of action-but the action isn't needed to keep this movie as interesting as it is. Im off my soapbox now.
"Battle Cry" and "Wake Island"............I will stay awake or miss work to watch either of those. If anyone has them on DVD I would love a copy.
I can't name my favorite but here are a few of them: Das Boot ("The Boat") Stalingrad Saving Private Ryan Patton A Bridge Too Far The Longest Day Letters From Iwo Jima Flags of our Fathers The Pianist
Why miss work and or stay up late to see these? Both of these movies are on DvD - just a thought. Another that's fast becoming a favorite of mine that I THINK is now on DvD--is he classic: "The Story of G.I. Joe"-which had a youngish Robert Mitchum as the Lieutenant and also Burgess Meridith who is portraying (and excellently done so) War Correspondant Ernie Pyle. This movie was shot on location in the actual debris from bombed out buildings-and was ahot shortly after the battles fought there. Much like Decision Before Dawn--you can't get much more realisic than that. The acting in this movie (GI Joe) isn't all great with the exception of Merideth and Mitchum, but it's still a great movie and also closely follows Ernie Pyles great book: "Brave Men." If ever a good movie NEEDS to be remade-this one deserves that honor-but ONLY if the movie is as true to the book as (GI Joe) is/was.
my favourites are 1.cross of iron 2.the longest day 3.the desert rats 4.battle of the bulge 5.u-571 6.battle of britain 7.saving private ryan 8.wing and a prayer 9.midway 10.anzio
I really liked Miracle at St.Anna but I'm eager to know more WW2 movies. Schindler's List was good too, but it's not exactly a WW2 movie.
Don't take this the wrong way but, with the two mentioned above--your off to a bad start in "needing to know" more movies about WWII.
In which we serve, A bridge too far, The longest day,Saving private ryan,Guns of navorone,Went the day well, The Eagle has landed. There are more but these spring to mind and im not sure which to put as my favourite especially as there are so many i cant put a name to at present.
I really can't restrict it to just one, and even my 'top 5' changes sometimes. But I'd go for ( and not in order ) : - Twelve O'Clock High Battle Of Britain Downfall A Bridge Too Far Where Eagles Dare ( OK - I know it's silly - but I love it ! )
Doh ! That's the trouble with doing a 'top 5' - as soon as I hit the button, I remembered : - Das Boot Ice Cold In Alex Saving Private Ryan The Bridge At Remagen A Walk In The Sun So we're up to a 'top 10' already.....
First time I watched where eagles dare I was disapointed, but then if I recall right I only watched it once more after that and still wasnt sure
Now you know what us John Wayne, Sir John Mills, William Holden, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Charlton Heston, Gary Cooper, Charles Laughton, David Niven, Basil Rathbone, Michael Redgrave, Cary Grant, Bruce Bennett, Robert Mitchum, Richard Widmark, Oscar Werner, Curt Jurgens, Kenneth More et el--fans have to go through ;-))
You have to be in the frame of mind for pure, cornball entertainment. As the original poster indicates..... ..if you take it seriously, you're missing the point ! ( 'Ve haff vays of making you talk....' )
I will have to go with "The Band of Brothers" as well, even if it is not a movie in the traditional sense.
There's no stopping me now ! Turn those speakers up.......... YouTube - Where Eagles Dare - Main Theme
