I would fight and die for Sweden at any time. I love my country so much and the fact that all my friends and family lives here makes me more willing to fight. My country have given me the base to a good life and I don't have a way to repay it enough for that. I think that you have to fight for what you love in wartimes (and always).

Proudly serving right now...I'm not too keen on dying but it comes with the job if needed. They say it's harder to kill for your country than it is to die for it...I believe that's true...not that I've killed anyone or anything but there's alot to deal with once you've taken a life. If you give yours, you don't have much to worry about.

Im still in High School so I can't serve yet, but after school I plan on joining the Marine Corps. The US is not without faults, but it's given me alot and I feel I owe something back.

I'm joining the British army. I am yet to take my oath but I will take it seriously, I will fight and die for Britain. Within reason.

I am with Zealot on this, I will hopefully be joining up soon and it kinda comes with the territory. The thing is, I have doubts about what soldiers fight for, a mate of mine just got back from the Gulf, I remember before he left he said something about 'I volunteered to go because my mates were going and I wanted to be with them.' Through conversaion I got the impression that he was not going to fight for queen and country but for the blokes fighting with him and his army. I feel the same, I would fight for the army and for my friends, since my nation is hardly ever at threat I doubt I would fight readily for queen and country.

I have just left school and I am thinking very seriously about joining the army. I have a lot of good friends in the army or are currently in their training. So if it came down to the crunch....I believe I would. But I don't know what combat is like. So during the heat of battle whether I would end my life at such a young age, then I cant say.

Then again, how often does one get a choice? I think that really no one in here is qualified to say if they would be willing to die for their country, after all, how many soldiers decided they were willing to die and then changed their minds when they lay on the field after the battle was over?

It's a difficult question, as who do most soldiers die for? Their comrades on the battlefield or their country? Most soldiers don't ask to be placed in a war situation.

I would be prepared to fight for my country, I have contemplated joining up many a time, although there are a lot of things I disagree with regarding Britain, and her policies. A lot of Blair’s policies is Bull Shit, never mind what others may say, Blair does act like Bushes lap dog, and to me it is shameful.

Also would I want to fight and die to save British culture and way of life? I don't know? as there are a lot of things I hate a bought Britain, such as those scummy scally's who hang around most city centres, parks etc, smashing, and vandalising everything, not forgetting robbing and jumping innocent GOOD people, I don't like to say this but I large war could actually be good for society as it would bring people together, don't think I want war, but sociologically I am a functionalist.

I'll stop rumpling on know, but I don't think that there is much in the UK I would want to fight for, except friends and family.

The Queen, Government, scum, and parts of the institution, I don't think so

I don't know where I saw this....I think it might have been a doc on the first gulf war and British units involved. perhaps even an SAS guy.

    The reporter asked the same thing. The warrior's answer in short was;

"You might join up for Queen and Country, but when you have been in the army for a while and the bullits really start flying, all that queen and country shit goes out of the window. The only thing you are fighting for is yourself and your buddy next to you..."

I'm reading "Ghostforce: The Secret History of the SAS" it sais that the soldiers in the Regiment fought for their buddys in the platoon, and if they were captured and tortured they promised each other to not speak within 24 hours after capture because they would fail their buddys then. It wasn't so much "For queen and country" in the Regiment.

Good point Phil, I live in North London and when I look around I see very little worth fighting for, there is no way I a putting my life on the line for the sake of the 'Scallys' (am I to assume you are from Manchester Phil? ;) ) and its not like I am a major fan of Blair etc. Then again, as much as I opposed the Gulf all the way up to its end, something in me wanted to be there, sounds weird but its true. I want to join the army because I feel I have something to offer, if part of 'doing my part' involves risking my life then fair enough. The thing is, our nation is not really at risk, at least not from anything the army can really stop so to be honest fighting for 'king and country' doesn't come into it.

As for the fighting from comrades thing, it has happened throughout history, the 12th SS in Normandy began fighting fanatically for their fuhrer but when they came out they were fighting for their lives and the lives of their comrades (IMHO) and the same applies to groups like the SAS, I do not honestly believe that many British soldiers went into the Gulf to fight to protect their homeland, they did it because they had a job to do and because they did not want their mates to fight without them. I expect many of the US soldiers had a slightly different attitude but then again, patriotism is far stronger over the pond it would appear.

You can't decide if you're gonna die or not in a war. You can't fight without the risc to die.

A few people have hit it on the head...when you join up, it's for your country. When it comes down to it, its the guy next to you. He becomes closer than any of your friends back home...you're there not to kill the enemy, but keep each other alive. When I was in basic training, we had a talk about this. I told some of the guys that although I may sound like an ass for saying it, "I doubt I would jump on a grenade if it came in our foxhole." A few agreed it was a sucky thing to say but appreciated the honesty. Then I finished what I was saying by telling them "but you never know whats gonna happen on a battlefield. A whole different set of thinking comes in." They agreed. You don't really know until the situation comes up. You may die for your country willingly, you may not. I call it two different things. Someone that jumps on a grenade, pulls a suicide mission, or covers a buddy up under hostile fire is said to have given his life in battle. Someone who is shot or blown up while trying to survive so to speak is said to have his life taken in battle.

As someone who has many countries and fatherlands... I would have to think about it. My passport and ID clearly say: BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND, but parts of my soul says: REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAIS, REINO DE ESPAÑA and ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS... I wouldn't know how to respond to "Would you fight and die for your country?" I would have to start by deciding which is my real country? Which is the one I care the most about? Once made that question I would fight and die; for my style of life, for the ancient culture, traditions, the loved ones and most important: the best things that country has to offer to man kind. And of course, once enlisted there are your arms-brothers, your 'buddies' who become the most important ones at those times. Why do you think the French Foreign Legion men were so close and fought so bravely if they had nothing in common when we speak about nationalities? It was only about combat brotherhood.

I will remember my grandafther's words over and over again. He and his man, foot soldiers in the Eastern Front who were nothing but numbers to their superiors didn't fight for their Führer, for National Socialism nor for destroying Communism. They fought for their comrades!

I would "fight and die" for the US. Indeed, our country has faults, yet I have been given freedom and a chance to live a great life. Im still in high school, but I will join. I think that anyone who would not die for his country should probably leave instead of griping about it.

4 of us went along to Liverpool Carrers information offices as a laugh, 3 went thru with it to the end. One Navy, one army, one airforce.

The other went back to school is now a bank mangager, probably earning more money than the 3 of us others ever did.

None of us joined with the idea of dying for our country, it probably never crossed our minds.

We joined for a little adventure, travel, and if truth be known, a uniform is always a nicle little magnet to young lads.

Die for my country? No, die for my friends? Only if I was in the position where I had to and there was no other immediate choice.

Anyone who wishes to die for thier country needs to re evaluate their life.
