    Hello All

Let me start by saying hello, I am new here, and am looking for information on a regiment which fought during WW2. My Grandfather who has recently passed away searved in the 53rd (FD) holding regiment R.A. I am trying to find out any information I can about this regiment.

I have googled the regiment and found very little, well no information at all. While searching I came across this website and am hoping some of the members may be able to point me in the right direction.

Any help anyone can give would be very very welcome.

I have searched the national archives, but again very little information has come up. Not sure if it would still be classified.

Anyway thank you for taking the time to read my message and thanks in advance if anyone can help.

    Regards

I thought I would add, he faught in the UK army, as after reading some other posts they are for forign armed forces.

This is the only thing which comes close to what you've mentioned:

BBC - WW2 People's War - Army: 53rd (London) Medium Regiment Royal Artillery

In your other posting about medals you mention writing to the RAF. The Royal Artillery is an army unit so the Royal Air Force will not be able to help you.

You might want to write these folks about your grandfather as they are the ones who can pull up his service file:

    Army Personnel Centre
    HQ Secretariat
    Historical Disclosures
    Mail Point 400
    Kentigern House
    65 Brown Street
    Glasgow
    G2 8EX

    IKWewb, welcome to the Forum.

The 53rd (FD) Holding Regiment, RA was indeed a Royal Artillery unit. I can't find any other information except that it existed. The Royal Artillery Museum should be able to help you.

As alieneyes suggests, you can obtain your grandfather's Service Record. The address is correct, but there are two documents you need to complete. See this page for info.

    Alieneyes, and GPRegt

Thank you both for your replies. I didn’t know that the R.A meant the Royal Artiery. I live in London, so will be heading there next week to see if they can help. I have filled in the Kin Ship forms already, just need to do the SAR form now.

Thanks both again for your help, I find it strange tho that almost nothing can be found on the regiment on the internet tho or is this normal.

I already have my Grandfathers discharge book, which shows where he was stationed, rank etc etc. But when you say I can get his Service Records what would this show?

Also the address that Alieneys posted, would this be where I write to with regards to the mdeals? As I know he never climbed them after the war finished.

Again thanks, you have given me allot to go on, as b4 it sounds like I would have been looking in the wrong area with regards to the RAF.

    Kind Regards

    You're very welcome!

Information on the Net is all dependent on what people publish.

What documents you receive in your grandfather's Service Record will depend on what is in his file.

Medals - scroll down towards the bottom of this page for all you need to know.

Let us know how you get on at Firepower.
