hi i was recently watching CNN and they say 6 out 10 americans expect another world war in their lifetime... from all the things happening right now i myself think that if things keep going the way they are it is highly capabale of happening... what do you think, is another world war imminent?

Define world war. If you mean a war between nations which involves every nation in the world in open conflict no, I doubt it will happen within the next 70 years or so. On the other hand if you mean a conflict that will affect every part of the world, including asymmetrical warfare, then it's already here.

I wonder which country, except for the US, is capable of fighting a prolonged war on a global scale? Even the US is hard pressed as it is. Major conscription would be called for.

I think in case of war, we'll see a series of "limited" (in scale and geography) wars rather than one big one.

It is unlikely. Right now the world is in a mono-power state (ie, the US is the only major power). Until either political alliances or, another state or states rises to a level that can match the US politically, economically and, militarily a "world war" is unlikely.
An additional factor would be some political reason(s) that such a war could be ignited unlying (No, the reason would not likely be economic alone. It rarely is.) the relationship of the combatants (Revolution is always a good one. Nothing like forcing your new-found "better" political system on your backward neighbors....).

Personally I believe that the fear of total destruction by nuclear weapons has kept us from total world war time and time again. Limited nuclear war- unfortunately I cannot believe in this so better not start using them.

Hoping that the all old USSR missiles are in safe places...

I agree with Kai on that one, as soon as you start to use small nukes it becomes slightly more justified for others to use larger ones. Then again, which nuclear power is going to attack another?

The Russian mafia! Ready to use them in some gang war versus La Cosa Nostra or the Mexican drug-dealers! ;)

Also, they can sell a couple to Bin Laden for a couple hundred million dollars!

    That's a scary thought!

Pakistan and India perhaps? Or would they face a cold war of themselves?

Just heard recently that Iran is going to continue their program for developing different uranium isotopes in their nuclear plants...does not sound really peaceful, does it?

Wonder what'll happen when/if China finally has enough with Taiwan and takes it back.

A four way battle between India, Pakistan, China, and Russia would be interesting. All have nukes and all have fought among themselves the last 60 years. All you need is something to set them off like overpopulation and food shortage.
