Heer officer, Seigfried Knappe, who authored Soldat, Reflections of a German Soldier (an excellent book) gave an interview found here where he talks of the fighting in Berlin in 1945.

Yes that was interesting. What Herr Knapp was correct about junior officers commanding divisions. When my grandfather came out of the Hospital, he was assigned to the 38th SS PzGdr div. It was only a regiment in size and had 5 commanding officers assigned to it but never showed up. Until then, it was commanded by two SS Obersturmbannfuhrers who shared the duty. Yet, they received orders as if they were a 'real' division with a 'real' commanding general.
