    I read the first one and really enjoyed it. Haven't had a chance to take a look at the second one as I have been a bit absorbed in reading about other aspects of the European part of the Second World War.

    Hi;
    Just finished book 1 (I read 2 first) and what a journey! Of particular interest to me was the following of the Iowa division from green citizen soldiers to grizzled veterans. It is interesting that the fall of Tunisia caused one quarter of a million crack Axis troops to fall into Allied captivity and that it really did not have to happen-evacuation plans were vetoed by Hitler. It is fortunate that the combat capable Italian armies of the desert fell into Allied hands; Mussolini could have used them for cadre as well as defense of the Italian homeland.
    If the Kasserine Pass battles showed the Americans what a really formidable force the Wehrmacht machine could be in offense the Fall of Tunis showed our guys how really deadly the NAZI tiger could be on defense. Well written and by all accounts well researched, I can heartily recommend the first two and anxiously await the arrival of book 3.

    PS. The author also explores the role the ULTRA secret played in the whole drama; Like Rommel's surprise attack on Montgomery running smack into the teeth of an ambushing force. The Germans supposed their Italian allies were betraying them and never did figure out how the Allies were coming to anticipate their moves. This further strained the Axis alliance relations.
    PS. There is an account of a POW ship leaving Tunisia in the final days. The ship was bombed and strafed by Allied aircraft, beached on a reef and bombed and strafed some more. Fortunately only one bomb struck the ship and it was a dud. Most of the POWs survived.

    Thanks for the reviews. I keep looking at these books (especially the second) and keep wondering if they are solid reads. Guess this means a trip to the bookstore.
