Looking for "What if" book

Years ago I've read the book on WWII. The book was one of those "what if" versions: the author describes real historical events to some point and than "changes" a little piece to speculate about what would have happened.
In this book author describes the beginning of the German invasion of Soviet Union. At the end of the summer or early fall Hitler makes a trip to the Eastern Front and on the way back his plane crashes. He was not killed but, temporarily taken "out commission". The rest of the book speculates about what would have happened, if the invasion was run by professional German military, rather then by a politician.
Unfortunately I don't remember nether exact title, or the author’s name. Maybe somebody on this forum heard about it and can remind me?

 

I can not help you on that one clown, I to remember reading one of those what if books many years ago, the bit I remember in the book I read was if the Germans took Malta they would had won the war. Well I find that a hard one to believe in, anyway welcome the forum.

The only book I can remember beeing a what if is Richard Harris 'Fatherland'. The book is set after Hitler won the war !!!

 

It's called "The Moscow Option" By David Downing - not a bad read.

 

Yep, Moscow Option.

Ends with the Japanese carriers being sunk in a major battle off Panama, The US 1st Armoured saving Jerusaleum and the Wermacht somewhere past Moscow.

Great Book.

 

Just a question; Exactly how did the Japanese carriers get "off Panama?" PFM?....probably...

 

They found that the USN had been reading their code, a reverse to what happened in that they did a fake message and found the US reacted to it.

Sank 2-3 CVS off Midway.

Someone decided to hit Panama and close the Locks forcing the USN to go around the Cape.

The US worked out (cant remember how) the intention and reinforced from the Atlantic ( and I think 1-2 repaired CV in the Pacific) plus a lot of land based units. Heavy CAP over the CZ forced the Japs to make another raid, while bombing up the Japanes noticed small dots high in the sky......

Worth getting the book to find it all out.

"Moscow Option" looks pretty close to what I'm looking for. I should probably get the book, and see (couldn't tell from the description on Amazon).
I am impressed with the author though. He seems to write on every topic from WWI, to Carol Lewis, to biographies of Stalin, Malcom X, Mahatma Gahni... to futbol (Argentina vs England)...
