Posting this with copyright concerns in tow.

I own this great book and suggest anyone pick it up also.

I have two copies, the original one I got at the PX when I was in the Marines, signed by Sledge, and a copy I re-read and loan out. One of the best books ever.
Did you ever see the mini-series "The Pacific"?

Next to A Higher Call by Adam Makos, this book is my second favorite World War Two related book. One of the best memoirs I have ever read. Well written and very detailed.

Sledge's genuine honesty and attention to detail are what make this book.

I did see the a few episodes of The Pacific, but never got the time to watch the whole set. I've not seen the episodes based upon Sledge. The series is definitely on my to-watch list.

Higher Call was always one I was interested in, another recommendation means I'll have to pick it up.

I'll add this lecture that Eugen Sledge gave, courtesy of the Ludwig von Mises Institute.

The Sledge portions are the best part of the series, IMHO. Sledge's widow thought Joseph Mazzello did such a good job of portraying Sledge that she gave him the pipe Sledge had carried through the war.

I wish they would've expanded Manila John's story, possibly into a mini-series of his own. He learned his machine gunners skill and expertise in the Army you know.

Yeah, but he learned at Parris Island that he couldn't leave his post unless properly relieved. Fortunately, he ran out of Japs before his relief arrived.

I recommended With the Old Breed to my dad who wasn't originally expecting to read it and was going to move on to another book. But as he kept reading he began to enjoy even more and even said that he's glad that I recommended it. He's a man of few words when it comes to describing how he feels about books but when I asked him about With the Old Breed he said it's one of the best books that he has read.
