    Paul Galland

Paul Galland was the youngest of the Galland brothers. Paul Galland was credited with 17 victories in 107 combat missions.
On 31 October 1942 Galland participated in the vengeance raid on Canterbury. On the return flight Galland answered a call from a German pilot being attacked by a Spitfire. The Spitfire spotted Galland’s approach and pulled up into the cloud cover. Galland attempted to follow but stalled and had to dive away to regain speed. The Spitfire took the opportunity to dive from the clouds and shoot down Galland’s Fw 190 A-4 (WNr 2402) “Black 1”.

Or was he mistakenly shot down by another pilot of JG26.(?)

    Wilhelm-Ferdinand "Wutz" Galland

On 17 August 1943 at 16:52 three Staffeln from II./JG 26 took off from Lille-Nord under the command of Major Galland against a formation of four-engined bombers on their return course from Schweinfurt. Over Lutych the unit encountered a formation of 150 to 200 bombers, escorted by nearly 200 escort fighters. II./JG 26 bounced the bombers but were, in turn, attacked by a unit of Thunderbolts from the 56th Fighter Group. Their fire crippled the Focke-Wulf 190 A-5 flown by “Wutz” Galland which crashed at high speed near Liegne, 5 km west of Maastricht.

The impact left a large crater in the ground from which it was impossible to remove all the wreckage. Some sources suggest that “Wutz” Galland was shot down by the American ace Walker “Bud” Mahurin (24.25 confirmed, 4 probable and 2 damaged victories) of the 56th Fighter Group, USAAF.

Wilhelm Ferdinand “Wutz” Galland had 54 aerial victories all scored on the Western Front in 186 missions. His score included 7 four-engined heavy bombers and 37 Spitfires.

On 28 January he received the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold for 24 victories. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 18 May 1943 for 35 enemy aircraft destroyed.
