well ...if we encounter them ...its a given ,that it will be here , and not OUT THERE ...right ? ...this means they have somehow figured a way to warp the time space thingy , unless they come out of the ocean or something..., this also means we would be foolish to antagonize them in any way ...as we would be a stoneage culture compared to them ...i dont know who has been driveing saucers arround our airspace for the last 60 years or so ...but i assure someone is ...the foofighters are very real , and it seems they have taken a greater intrest in us since ww2 ...when the foo word was coined...google up the reported sightings ...use only pilots if you wish ..civel ,military ,yank ,canuck ,euro, russian ,japanese...whatever ...a conspirecy of aviators to hoax the public , to what purpose ??? ....and professional pilots have very keen eyesight and are not a bunch usually associated with mind altering drugs ...they know what they saw and what it was not ...ie a flock of birds ,swamp gas , a weather balloon ,a cessna 152 ...and also ..as i said above we can safely assume that only a fraction of pilots are going to report such an event ...my dad read all the local papers carefully for a week ...when nothing was reported of a ufo ...he likewise reported nothing....weeks later at a cocktail party my dad asked col gardner (the co witness ) ..."what about that thing we saw the other night , sir ? ..the col looked my dad in the eye and replied , "WHAT thing , capt?...my dad nodded ...end of discussion....subject closed...
... to clarify ,what i saw that night i could easily have shot with a .22 ..it was that low and that slow ...and the bullets would have made a loud metalic ping , imo this was not some etherial glowing sphere or fuzzy gassy type thing..... it was as concrete in its appearance as an f4 phantom jet and pehaps as heavy....i know ,you ask , rightly , why is there not even one shred of scientific evidence ,a fragment of a wreck ,an alien beer can ,something ...i can only shrug ...i agree ,given the numbers of sightings ,not one ounce of physical evidence is danming indeed ...and if i were you ,, and not me ...i wouldnt belive it either.....

    Why not?

I'm quite amazed at the number of wild assumptions made in this thread about a hypothetical "super-intelligent alien race". For one thing, why should they be superior in every sense, rather than simply having surmounted the problems of interstellar flight?

Why should a more perfect form of society follow automatically from a higher form of intelligence? Surely you realize that the most intelligent species on earth is also the most dangerous. There is no reason to assume that a race intelligent enough to travel between the stars is peaceful (or warlike) by definition. While they could teach us the secrets of space travel, perhaps we could teach them quite a lot as well?

On the other hand I don't see how our religions would be relevant to them, since they are always heavily ingrained in cultures that they don't share. They will no doubt have their own systems of belief, since if they are intelligent they will have had to face the same questions as humans - where did we come from and where do we go when we die?

On another matter, why would mere technological superiorty mean they could easily destroy us? Loads of occasions in human history show that technology and victory are not often very obviously connected.

Finally, why would breaking the speed of light be a precondition for interstellar flight? What if the alien race simply knows extremely long life (giant turtles could easily make it to the nearest starts at 1 c) or has managed some way of avoiding the age dilemma (classic options include cryostasis and regeneration)?

They would have realized (obviously on more than one level) that violence doesn't work.

    (Star Trek Referance, be forewarned)
Before the Vulcan surrenderred to logic they were as bad as humans. By Kirk and Spock's time Vulcan was probably the most peaceful planet in the Federation (not as much as that R&R planet but.......go figure)

I think I'm spinning myself in circles......

That kind of society only works if every member of it thinks or acts in the correct way (or if you have a very heavy police presence!). The lesson we can learn from humanity is that with intelligence often comes greed, or the desire for power, or...

I'm not sure if you could take an entire species over that hurdle and keep them over that hurdle.

We could teach them about lead poisoning! :kill:

My theories on alien encounters aren't really very deep... If something is a possible threat to the human race our own interests should take priotiry above all else, including morality...

Not wanting to start a new thread on it, and since the two are kinda related... What do you think about terraforming? Is it something we can realistically hope to achieve? The colonization of a planet would require us to set up an oxygen producing ecosystem, of course the planet would need to meet a few pre-requisites... Similar atmosphere to earth, acceptable distance from the sun, stable environment... Scientists seem to pick Mars as a good choice for out first colony... Probably won't happen for a while to come...
But George Bush promised to send the first manned flight to Mars :(

if a band of mounted knights from 1407 were to encounter a modern afv or helo gunship on the field ,they might attack it ( if they could get their horses to obey,,) but deep in their pugnacious hearts i think they would know they were makeing a terrible mistake ...if the visitors can make a pie tin shaped thing fly (we still cant) and even make it hover and presumably fly it accross deep space , i think its safe to assume they are not armed with swords and crossbows....it would seem from the most common abduction or personal encounter reports that the small slight fellows with the very large dark almond shaped eyes have made a great many visets to this planet (ive never seen one nor do i wish too },if their intensions were warlike ,one would think they would have acted by now...
there seems to be a correlation between the opening of the atomic age on earth and the numbers of visets that are reported .. iirc a private pilot here on the west coast of the us made one of the first daytime saucer type ufo reports sometime in the early 50s ( they seem to have a great intrest in our aviation progress since about ww2)...again , see foofighters
given the recent poliferation of nukes in the hands of lunatics and suicide bomber kinda guys and also the current greenhouse gas debacle, perhaps these et travelers are scientists or even tourists comeing to witness first hand a great mass extinction involving semi inteligent life ...prolly something they dont get to see every day ...kinda like seeing a full solar eclipse or a major eruption at vesuvius or mt st helens....i wonder if they will be selling t-shirts and bumper stickers ??.....event horizon EARTH 2014 ...be there!!!

Y'all miss the point that any beings, to get here easily, could simply travel through interdimensional space. This way the trip would, concievably take no time at all..
In this way, the appearance of ufo's etc, can be solid, fast moving, hovering... I tend to think that 'aliens' are still trans dimensional beings, not wanting conquest militarily, but by polluting the human genome.
Just a real sidewise thought, what if the ante christ is a hybrid??

Well, my sister-in-law thinks she's descended from aliens from the Pliedaes. I'm not sure that she doesn't really believe it.

All I can say is that we are unlikely to be contacted by an alien race, since they would be looking for intelligent life, and there ain't none on this planet! ;)

Of course there is, and contact has already been made!

It's just that the dolphins haven't bothered to tell us about it... :p

If mice are so smart, why do they keep blundering into those obvious traps we set for them? ;)
