Now I have read elsewhere that "by 1945 (officially) the Soviet Army had over 1500 captured German SdKfz 250 or 251 armored halftracks in use. I know of at least one tank brigade that had mounted one of its 'tank rider' companies in 'trophy' halftracks as early as 1942, so it was a long-lasting phenomena."

    And other info on that?

Such a Panhard 178 with a 5.0cm KwK L/60 gun was captured and used in 1944-1945 by the 1st GMR (Groupement Mobile de Reconnaissance) of the FFI (French Forces of the Interior). This unit later called 'escadron autonome de chars Besnier' (Besnier independent tank squadron) is equipped in December 1944 with :

Two vintage photos of German automobiles captured by the U.S. during WWII. The top photograph is from an unknown U.S. unit and is labelled "Howard Slova, 1st Cook, Germany, '45 June" on the back. The bottom photograph is from an unknown unit of Ninth Air Force and appears to be an Opel Olympia

    "SdKfz 251 Calliope (see picture)

Several afv wrecks with at least one 251 without its right track is cut by the American 743rd Tank Batilion, 30th Inf.Div. 7th armoured group in the area of München-Gladbach (south of Germany near Holland) in february 1945 to serve as a mount for the Calliope rocket launcher (60 tubes of 6.4"). The calliope is placed queer in the vehicle. The levitation of the craft (normal on a tank turret and gun) is done by a Pak 40.

Michel Eastes posted a message on George Bradford's AFVboard:
My father was a member of the 7th group. A breakout was anticipated and captured German track, all of which had to be towed into position, were modified. When completed these vehicles were, still towed, in company of a Calliope unit, to a place across the river Rühr, where a susspected German buildup was developing. On command, all rockets were fired and the Americans skeedaddled. The German halftracks were abandoned in place."
