I had one LRRP meal long ago. I do remember some Rangers while in Haiti trading MREs for the "Humanitarian" meals that were being given to the Haitians LOL. Those were interesting. I tried acouple before.

I was inservice during the transition. I very much referred the C-Rats. Reasons why C-Rats are better than the best MRE's

    1) The chocolate. For ten of those, you could get the Filipino hooker of your choice for an hour. 25 would buy you the night. Sometimes worked with Japanese hookers.

    2) Sterno tabs. Add a little lighter fluid, some manual labor, some fishing line, a can, and a det tab, and you had one superior napalm booby trap.

During Ike, while on ride out team at work, we had MRE's and a civilian version. Those MRE's were messy, nasty, and just not worth the effort.

Schwartzwald Cake can't be beat. I tried my first (and sadly, ONLY "real" piece) at an outdoor cafe on the outskirts of Hamburg-back in Mid Sept 2000. Eating that slice of cake --well-nothing I ever had before could come even close-even though I have tasted great cake made by my Grandmother in Kingsville. Since then-yes i've had a few slice of said cake--but though made using the same ingrediants-still did not come close to comparison with the cake in Germany.
