Beginning

All I know about WWII is what I have picked up here and there, and while it might be more than average, It's nothing compared to most of you guys. Can any of you reccomend some starting reference material. I'm sure without good basics of the war and prewar. I won't understand the rest!

I have just started John Keegans 'The Second World War'. It is a good book and seems to give a good overview. I must say that recently I have come to realise that I do not need to know 'everything' about the war or even remember most of what I read, even men like Keegan and Ryan do not, they rely on sources and what they remember from their research. Basically what I am saying is just keep looking around, research, read what interests you and DON'T TRY TO LEARN EVERYTHING!

Nice one, Stefan! I try to tell myself that as well, but then I run into a book about an aspect of the war that I haven't been previously interested in or knew about, and find myself incapable of leaving the book where it is. I HAVE to buy and read it. Well, at least read it.

Several times I have been going through my books, thinking; I am going to sell all the books that are not connected with my main interests....What happens? I end up reading these non-main-interest books....

And I dislike the fact that I can't remember everything I ever read. I know it is impossible, but often here on the forums there is a thread/discussion on something I have read something about....but my memory fails me...I know vaguely what it is about, but don't want to join into the discussion just saying; 'Hey I read a book about that'...I do that too often anyway. I just don't have the time really to go through my library on all those occassions

You are welcome guys, that is not my site as such, rather I write for it (the British Weapons bit). I agree entirley Stevin, every time I go to by fathers copious library (over 4000 volumes last count and that does not include my own and my brothers, easily 800 volumes each) I find something else of interest and have to stop for a read.
