    Do We?

Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building...Everyone jumped to conclusions on that one and the quick rumors were that Middle-Easterners were being sought by the FBI...Look how that turned out.

"We" know nothing more than what the news reports are telling us, and that isn't much...

It sounds like amateur work to me-if this was professional there should have been a lot more casualties. AND the police would not have so easily found and disabled the 3rd and 4th devices. But as you all say it is too early to ascertain much of anything.

"Boston Athletic Association president Joanne Flaminio said there was 'special significance' to the fact that the race is 26.2 miles long and 26 people died at Sandy Hook Elementary school."

As if such a tragedy is not bad enough, there is the horrible irony that the Sandy Hook victims and their families were being honored at yesterday's Boston Marathon.

There is overwhelming sadness when these things happen. As Richelle Goodrich said, “Evil might not prevail in the end, but it certainly doesn't fail to devastate in its time.” The horror is uppermost in our minds today. But I hope the more lasting impression will be the selflessness and good we see in the face of evil. The sight of those two soldiers trying to break down the barriers to get to the wounded, the first responders and "ordinary" people rushing in to help without concern for their own safety.

The conspiracy theories have started already. I've just seen a facebook page called "our thoughts are with the victims of the Boston bombings" which which some retard claims was put up on Saturday.
    http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=235717619902397&set=a.229595717181254.1073741828.229591930514966&type=1&theater

And the press are now covering it-

"A tribute page to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing was supposedly set up on April 13.
    FALSE
Facebook tribute page to Boston Marathon bombing victims was not created before the bombings took place
Like many events of national importance, Monday's bombings at the Boston Marathon has a Facebook page that aims to serve as a tribute to the victims. Titled "Thoughts Go out To All Involved In The Boston Explosions," the page currently says it was created on April 15 -- the day of the bombings. But an image purporting to be a screenshot of the page from earlier in the day shows it saying it was created on Saturday, two days before the actual attack. MSN News asked Facebook to confirm the actual date of the page's founding and thus address accusations that whomever set up the page must have had prior knowledge of the attacks.
    False alarm
Perhaps not surprisingly, the page in question was not founded on April 13, but on April 15 -- the day of the bombings. Facebook spokesperson Andrew Noyes tells MSN News that the page used to be about a different subject matter altogether, but was changed on Monday to reflect news of the bombing. "We looked into the issue and the page existed before, with a different name and a different subject matter," Noyes says. "It looks like the admin of the page changed it to reflect the events of (April 15)." As for the screenshot being passed around that shows a "joined Facebook" date of Saturday, April 13: Noyes says that a user can change the group's founded date to anything they want."

That is something that annoys the heck out of me. One of my son's friends is a rabid conspiracy theorist and he posts and the rants about this kind of thing all of the time...He posted this last night.

Every once in a while it gets the best of me and I type a long, knee-jerk reaction reply. But I always delete it before posting, not because I don't believe it needs a response, but I know that anyone that irrational won't listen to reason anyway...(Assuming, of course, I am the voice of reason.)

Surely any conspiracy type theory has to have a reason and story....I don't see any reasons or stories anywhere. Best to wait until the buggers admit to responsibility....Someone will.

Well politics has now entered into it. There are politicians now blaming the bombing on the sequester. Turds! They don't do their jobs leading to the sequester and then complain about it. It's like the burglar that sues the homeowner when he is njured breaking into the house.

One of my friends in our Dostoyevsky class is from that area and one of his friends was actually running the marathon. Apparently he stopped for a bathroom break at the 25.5 mile mark... he was sure that if he hadn't made that stop he would have been at the finish line. Pretty scary.

He (Saudi national) was questioned and released, not even a "person of interest" now. Let's quit speculating on who, why and wait for the investigations to at least get started.

Remember that wingnut that bombed the Olympic Park in Atlanta turned out to be the same guy who was setting bombs at abortion provider clinics. Took the FBI and locals years to figure that one out, and in the mean time they destroyed a young man's life with speculation and inuendo. I don't know how Mr. Jewel is doing these days.

The lack of any claim of responcability tends to make me think we are dealing with a local, rather than international terror group.

Remember we're talking post-Bin Laden Al Queda. By not claiming responsibility, they still achieve their goal of causing fear in our populace. If they can cause suspicion of internal, domestic threats we will divide our attention and take some pressure off of them. I don't think you can rule out either group as a suspect. The makeup of the bombs is similar to types our military regularly encounters/encountered in Afghanistan and Iraq. The technique of using one bomb to funnel people into the kill zone of the second is also a popular technique with Al Queda and the Taliban. Some people discount Al Queda because a couple of the bombs were not detonated. I would remind you that there have been a number of Al Queda sponsored attacks, here, where the attempt failed. Anyone can build a bomb, detonating it is harder and a synchronized attack such as this is harder still. I tend to think it more likely to be the work of an organized group, instead of a small group like McVeigh and Terry Nichols.

The fact that there has been no claim of responsibility doesn't really tell us much about who did it. I think that it is more likely an individual or a very small group who operate independent from, but perhaps are inspired and informed by a larger organization. That's what the inter-webs can do.

For example, this AP story from earlier today mentions that Al Qaeda's online magazine  had an article with instructions on how to make a bomb out of a pressure cooker. As confirmation, here's a 2010 CNN article reporting on that very article.

Does that mean that AQ "did it"? Not exactly, but it does suggest that they are informing and encouraging (and inspiring?) people who might be motivated enough to murder innocent people.

I won't put the blame on anyone at this stage. There are enough groups at both ends of the political spectrum with the knowledge and where with all to build a device of this sort. I'll wait until the feds announce who they're after. Until then, all this is idle speculation.

I actually agree with you, Lou. IIRC, the FBI has stated that no one or group has been ruled out.

I'm afraid we're in a very small group, Tommy. Everybody wants to blame someone, from Obama to Al Qaeda and everyone in between. I'll just bide my time until the FBI announces something.

At this point it is all speculation. If I were investigating this matter, I would certainly not tell the general public what I got every time I'd get a new lead. Let us trust authorities to do their job. I'm sure there are plenty of people who do have useful elements and that one of these tracks will get to the scumbag and arrest him, live or dead, (or them if there are more) . What disgusts me most is the fact that children were targetted too.
