"[1988 x 3075] USS Heerman (DD-532) featured on the cover of the upcoming graphic novel adaptation of The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, by James D. Hornfischer, who tragically passed away this year at the age of 55." Did they wait until he died?
"All of the Battleships Built Under the Washington Naval Treaty - which do you think is the best? Which is your favorite? [3296 × 1858]"
"[1769X1141] Italian heavy cruisers band together to take part in spectacular fleet maneuvers with Benito Mussolini and Miklós Horthy as special guests. Gaeta, 1936."
"Two crew members of a Tiger I heavy tank comparing their 88 mm round to a 50 mm round." Stuart tank crews had some balls.
"A Spitfire Mk. V being loaded aboard USS Wasp at King George V docks in Glasgow, Scotland, in April 1942, at the start of 'Operation Calendar'." Any idea as to way the engine cowling was open?
Thunderbolt pilots of the 4th fighter group in the briefing room at Debden. The 4th fighter group flew P-47 Thunderbolts between March 1943 and February 1944. In the center of the photo, looking straight at the camera is James A. Goodson. A dapper looking pilot. Then again, aren’t they all.
Reminds me of that story: Officer addressing a room full of pilots. "The bad news is the target is heavily defended. It's very probable that only one of you will return from this mission." All the pilots in the room look around with the same thought, "You poor bastards."
"Ikarus IK-2, a Yugoslavian fighter introduced in 1935. It was armed with two machine guns in the wings and one cannon firing through the propeller hub. Only 8 of the 12 built were servicable during the 1941 Axis invasion, and the remaining four were used by the Independent State of Croatia."

"GIs of the the 87th Regiment, 3rd battalion march through a staging area in the vicinity of Ghiro in Monsagrati province of Lucca, near Villa Colli 1944. [1200x800] (Original color photo)"
U.S. Marines rest in the field on Guadalcanal, circa August-December 1942. U.S. Navy Photograph. I drive my grandson, who is 16 and in private boarding school, from sports activities, to a local gym, to piano lessons, to the dentist, etc. I tell him about things like this, and the War. They don’t learn it in school. He is very bright, to say the least. He listens intently, doesn’t say anything, but seems interested. I don’t push the subject. I wish, when my father was alive, that I had asked him more questions about the War. At the time, it never really occurred to me. He was there.
